Shiitake Block

So I have a shiitake block and I was wondering about the best ways to care for it and some advice. So I have it in my shotgun FC like RR's. I've been told that they need a lower temp to fruit so my FC is about in the mid to upper 60's. I can't decide whether to put the lid on or leave the lid off though. Also, it says in the little booklet that came with the block that I should mist and there should constantly be water droplets on the block or fruiting bag that came with the block. Right now I'm using the bag as something to set the block on so it's not sitting on perlite. My problems are this:
-there appears to be one growth/bulb/pin? on top that has a crack and some black in it. I'm wondering if this is normal or is just a dark brown. [image] [/image]
-the mushrooms growing look and feel shriveled. Is this from lack of FAE or lack of water? Cause to give it one I have to take away the other by leaving the lid on or removing the lid.
[image] [/image]
-if I DO remove the lid can I rehydrate the perlite with sterile/H2O2 water to try to keep the humidity at a decent level?

Did you give it a good cold shock? Shiitake fruits better after several days in the 50's. I would avoid keeping it damp all the time. Take it to the sink and wash the whole block under running water, and then allow it to dry out for a day or two, and then repeat. If the weather is in the 50's or 60's and raining, be sure to set it outside.
Yours looks to be bubbling up well, so it should fruit soon, provided it's had the drop in temps it needs. RR

I put it outside and the temps where in the low 60's or so. I could put it outside again now that it's in the 50's before it warms back up. I did dunk it for 24 hours before I put it in the FC. So I should avoid misting directly onto the block. Also, if and when I get mushrooms is there any way for me to perpetuate the cycle and get spores to latch onto say a sawdust block or hardwood dowels for future grows?

The ball of puss doesn't like you either :P. The pins start as like cracks or bubbles on the surface of the block. I have one little pin poking out of the side that looks like a stem with no cap.

Shiitake aren't delicate like cubensis. You can mist or you can wash the whole darn block under the faucet, even when it has fruits on it. I'd put it outside at night if it's cool, and then bring it in during the day, but try to keep it in a cool place indoors.
You'll want to learn agar and sporeprinting/cloning techniques if you want to perpetuate the cycle. The chances of getting the shiitake spores to take on sawdust as opposed to all the other spores floating around are not good. RR

Thanks RR. So lid on or off? For shiitake is FAE or humidity more important? And how low of temps can shiitake stand before it needs to become an inside pet?

I dont think shiitake are nearly as picky as some shrooms .. my log was cold shocked in ice water.. and sprayed every other day indoors with RH around 50 percent.. it fruited fine .. cold shock is the most important thing .. if mine can fruit just sitting there indoors then I do not think you will need a lid on it good luck .. I am getting some alder together to try a bag of shiitake plus I have freshly cut oak logs to try to spawn to ..

Thanks orchid. So there's probably no worries about it if it should maybe get into the 30's?

I would think very high 30's low 40's wont hurt the log .. now if it froze solid on a hard freeze .. thats 3 or more hours sub freezing then well that might kill the mycelium .. good luck I love shiitakes and hope to get this isolated to trade or sell slants of shiitake ..in vacutainer vials..

Well from searching the forums for a bit it seems that a clone or isolate, like you said is the way to go. What was your plan? Tissue clone or spores to LC or agar? I've seen all four combinations and people seem happy with them. I don't think it'll freeze. I'll check real quick though. Thanks orchid. 5 mushrooms for yous. You too RR .

I heard they dont grow well from spores so they keep the strain alive and strong from cloning .. thanks for the +++++ ! I am going to clone a fruit I have on a log tomorrow or this weekend and grow it out on agar .. I can then take agar to knock up rye .. or you can make LC from a clean agar wedge .. or use your rye to spawn to dowels to hammer into freshly cut oak logs with holes drill into them .. but the sawdust and Lc seems the easiest way .. like you are doing .. I got my info from RR and GGMM ..good luck

what about when you keep it alive for 5 or more generations will it stop producing as well as before?

yeah I would think there would be problems . you have to go back to the original clone material and start from there ......

Well when I get a PC, I'll try a shiitake spore LC and a spore agar and tell you how it goes.
