starting my monotub tomorrow...need advice soon please!
    #7640022 - 11/15/07 02:27 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

ok, ive been away from my mushies and mycology for about a week and a half now. and b4 my accident, my 2 popcorn quart jars of Koh Samui were fully colonized. one had been for a week, and the other had just reached 100%. but like i said i was away from them for the past week and a half. do you think anything might have went wrong? can they dry out? they actually have quite a bit of condensation inside the jars.

im making a monotub out of an 18qt tote with 4 2" holes drilled 5" up in the centers of each side. as said, i have 2 quarts of myc'ed popcorn. and more coir than i know what to do with.

i have just a couple Q's if anyone can help me out.

- how much coir do you think is necissary for this monotub, given the dimensions, and amount of grain stated above?

- can i just tape the holes while its colonizing the spawn. then remove tape and fill holes with polyfill, and not worry about contaming doing this?

- should i pasturize my coir(its my first time and i want to take all the extra steps to help insure little chance of contam) and how cool should it be b4 i add my grain?

i think this is about it for now, im sure ill think of some more b4 i start. btw, sorry if this is hard to read, these pain pills make it hard to type and form sentences.

thanks
just me

however much it takes to make a 4-5" substrate depth? I heard you should just add boiling water to it and then let it cool for an hour and a half.

ok cool. that reminded me of another thing.

- i dont have any additives for the coir. are they needed?

i might be able to get some last minute coffee grinds, but nothings certain. will even the smallest amount of coffee grinds help? i definately dont have any of the gypsum or other addy's because i havent gotten my order from one of the shroomery vendors yet...i forget which one it was...

You should use poly fill from the beginning no need to switch.

You definitely should pasteurize. Use a candy thermometer to get water to 160 degrees Fahrenheit and poor it into a cooler with your coir. Let this cool then spawn the cooler also keeps it at pasteurization temps longer then a bucket.

i would def pasturize that coir. i recently spawned some cakes to coir. 2 cases had the pasturized coir(actually i just sort of boiled/steamed it on the stove for like 60-90 min) the other 2 i just added hot water. the 2 casings that didnt use pasturized coir got contaminated. many people say you dont need to but i would. i added coffee ground also, dont know how much that helped. damn i wish i would have just pasturized all of it.

ok, so is soaking different from the pasturizing?

like with casing, do i need to get it to field capacity, and then pasturize?

or in this case, soak the coir, crumble it, the bag it in my paint strainer, and pasturize it?

i just put the dry brick in a pot with over a gallon of water. then let it boil with a top on for a little over an hour. that isnt the proper procedure but its what i did. after the coir was done boiling, i squeezed out all of the extra water with my hands (till it just felt heavily damp). and when i was saying casing b4 i should have prolly just said tub, cuz i wasnt using the coir as a casing layer, i spawned the BRF cakes to the coir, then cased with some plain verm. just waiting for pins now.

** and dont let the pot boil dry. it almost happened to me cuz that coir soaks up a ton of water. dont worry about using too much water cuz u will just be squeezing out any excess anyway.

ok. i was gonna do the heat the water to 165 and pour it into a bucket with the coir bricks in it. but like u said let it soak it all up, then squeeze till its "heavily damp"

but after this do i need to do more of a pasturization, or is this step alone sufficent?

additives necissary?
-on either the coco coir spawn or the MGMC casing layer?

and please can someone tell me if just the one time with the boiling water on the coir bricks counts as pasturizing?

i have the dry coir
i have a 5 gallon bucket
i have 3 gallons of 165degree distilled water

pour it in. let it absorb. then break up the coir and cool off. is it ready to use after that or do i need to bag it up and soak it again in boiling water to attain field capacity?

ok, well i just found this link to Oatmans grow with coir only which makes me very happy, cuz i have coir only.http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/5909750/page/0/fpart/all/vc/1/nt/2

so all i need now if for someone to tell me that pouring the boiling water and letting the dry coir soak it up and draining to field capacity is enough "pasturizing" for my monotub!
