Poor Mans Incubator - Is this safe?

My incubator consists of a blanket covering the jars in a cardboard box with a 40w light pointed at the box. I put a pen thermometer through the lid and the temp stays around 78. The house is usually cool (low 70's) and gets cooler at night. Is this a safe setup? Would it be safe for me to put a higher watt light bulb in the lamp to increase the temp of the box? With the 40w bulb, the lamp is warm but safe to touch.

Sorry in advance if this is a repost but I could not find any info on this type of a setup. Usually the heat source is enclosed in the incubator or a separate chamber.

Lots of people on here will tell you it's not necessary to even have an incubation chamber. If you really want to use one though, I think I woulde stay with something (like the cooler 40W) that is less of a fire hazard than a higher wattage bulb, just to be safe.

Safe enough. There's going to be a warm spot on your box right next to the lamp though. You could just incubate at room temp if you're house is always in the 70's by the by. Just need patience. If you're incredibly worried though they sell heating fans at Walmart for like 12-30$. They're not heaters so they go up to like 80 and most have tip control now a days so you can set them up in like your closet and be REASONABLY sure you're not going to die in your sleep.

My nudist ass would freeze if it were any colder... night time the thermostat goes down to 60.
I have a small heater but I wouldn't want to leave it on all the time - I'd roast the closet. I just ordered a fish tank heater and will try to make a heat bomb or just throw it in a ptcher. They seem to be the lowest energy consuming heat source possible.

I wonder if we have any fire marshalls on this site. They could really have some great input on various incu set ups. I personally like the submersable aquarium heater approach, its not really too expensive, I'd check the temp of the hottest part of the box, and compare that to whatever the combustion temp (or whatever they call it) and i'd also check what the temp would be if the bulb was touching the cardboard for an extended period of time, in case something happens that knocks the lamp into the box.
I dunno, i don't like this set up, it makes me nervous, but i can't honestly see any real risk in it.

I would .. use a TiT in the least use a reptile heater in the bottom of a box . and at the most use a metal container if you have to use the light bulb ..but best would be tIt
edit reptile heater on the side of the box not bottom of box

Thanks for the great input. I propped up the incubator with another box and placed the underneath it. This should give a more even heat distribution since the is further away and the heat is contained. I also feel its a lot safer. Cheers!
