guitar preamp and poweramp? some Q's, I'm puzzled
    #7624469 - 11/12/07 03:29 AM (16 years, 4 months ago)

can you plug in your guitar directly in a guitar poweramp without a preamp? ofcoarse it's possible:tongue:, but will this make your sound worse?

can someone clearly explain to me what the uses and purposes are of poweramps vs preamps?

a power amp is supposed to boost whatever signal it gets, cleanly.

a preamp adds gain

yeah, a preamp takes your guitar signal and boosts it to a decent voltage level and the power amp takes that level and converts the voltage signal into a signal with a large current so it can drive the speakers it would be connected to.

I'm not sure if you can connect your guitar to a power amp but i think not,(not sure though).

A preamp boosts your guitar signal up to line level.

Most guitar amplifiers have built in preamps.

Most cheap guitar FX racks and pedal boards have built in preamps.

Indeed, the factual definition is that preamps take whatever signal they receive and increase it to line leves, which are the ones poweramps work with.
Poweramps drive the speakers, so their power is usually huge, and they are not prepared to deal with signal levels as low as the ones created by guitar pickups.

You should definitely use a preamp if you can, I'm not sure how dangerous it might be to plug the guitar straight into a poweramp, but if the poweramp has a built-in preamp then by all means do it.

What poweramp are we talking about here exactly?
