SUMMIT COUNTY — An anonymous tip received through the Summit County Crime Stoppers’ phone line led to the arrest of two men suspected of growing marijuana in a rental home near Breckenridge.
On Oct. 19, the Summit County Drug Task Force, in conjunction with the Summit County Sheriff’s Office and Breckenridge Police Department, executed a search warrant at 162 Sawmill Run Road in unincorporated Summit County. The search warrant was issued as a result of the anonymous tip.
Inside the house, officers discovered a “hot box” in a first floor bedroom that contained 14 growing marijuana plants in addition to other equipment used for indoor marijuana cultivation, according to a press release from the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.
The residence also contained multiple containers of marijuana, marijuana seeds, glass smoking pipes, seedling trays, planting pots and small amounts of cocaine, LSD and ecstasy.
Police arrested Chase Coffin, 24, who lives at the residence, on charges of cultivation of marijuana, a class 3 Felony and possession of more than 8 ounces of marijuana, a class 4 Felony. He posted a $15,000 bond and has been released from jail.
His roommate, 25-year-old Andrew Cotton, was arrested Tuesday in Clear Creek County based on an arrest warrant issued out of Summit County for charges of cultivation of marijuana, conspiracy to sell/distribute marijuana, possession of more than 8 ounces of Marijuana, possession of marijuana concentrate and possession of a schedule 1 controlled substance. These charges range from a class 4 Felony to a class 6 Felony. Cotton was released from the Clear Creek County Jail after posting a $15,000 bond.
An arrest warrant has been issued for a third resident of the house.
The anonymous Crime Stoppers caller will received a $750 reward for the tip. The Summit County Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to contact Crime Stoppers with knowledge of any illegal act being committed in the county. Crime Stoppers pays up to $1,000 for information that helps solve crimes in the county. Anonymous tips can be called to (866) 453-STOP.
In an unrelated incident, the home where the drugs were found in this case sustained extensive smoke damage during a fire on Oct. 22. Fire officials said then that the fire was linked to the wood burning fireplace.

I didn't think that was quite enough in most cases. If they get an anonymous tip then they usually have to corroborate it somewhat by looking in the windows or garbage. Otherwise they bust into tons of places for almost no reason, which does happen sometimes.

I thought the same thing...
Are you a cop? Scared a name out of a recent drug user? It's ok, here's this "anonymous" call giving you legal permission to take this BS accusation and use it to bust in somebody's door and destroy his home. Thing is, "anonymous" callers don't even have to exist. Even if a caller does exist, who's to say the call wasn't simply asked for.
No big deal though. Technically, all they have to do is say that you're funding terrorism with your drugs, and bust in the door -without- a warrant.

calm down everybody... an anonymous tip is not enought to get a warrant. In some cases the police can use a source known to them, but not to the court or the defendant, who has been correct in times past, to get a warrant, but when an annonymous source is used it must be corroborated, or the case is later thrown out in all instances I'm aware of.
The article did not say the tip was the evience used to get the warrant. The article said the tip led to the warrant. Most likely these idiots had crazy stupid signs of growing, plant bags sitting out, visible paraphanalia through the window, cuttings and fertilizer in the trash et cet.
This probably is what led to the warrant. Wait till its unsealed (if it is allready.)
