dunking in ziplock bag
    #7637815 - 11/14/07 11:32 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

Can I dunk a few cakes like this? I plan to take the 3 half pint cakes, put them in a gallon ziplock(sterilized with isopropl alcohol) and fill it with spring water. Then seal the ziplock up and put in the fridge for 24 hrs.

Will this work?

I have 2 SA cakes and a CHitwan cake, they have been in the FC for 9 days and haven't pinned. This is my first time with cakes and I didn't think dunking was absolutly neccassary to get pins, I guess it is.

Someone get back to me on this, I really need to get them out the FC and in the fridge tonight.

dunking in ziploc bags does work.

just make sure to use the freezer ones, not the stoarge ones.
the freezer ones hold tighter and are less apt to open on you
making your fridge a mess.
and/or put the bag with water and cakes in it in a bowl or something
in the fridge, just in case it does open up.

yeah I just searched on it right after I posted. tons of threads saying that its awesome. I took the cakes out the FC, they felt very light and dry, like a cracker, they definitly neede3d some rehydration. I just thought dunking was for achiving higher yields, not something that just has to be done to cakes.
I can't wait to be looking at SA pins and Chitwan pins!

DO NOT put alcohol in the water. Ziplock brand bags come sterile. Rinse your cake off, fill up a ziplock brand sandwich bag until its fairly full, drop the cake in, and seal it as tightly as you can. Then double bag it.

Stick it in the refrigerator for 24hrs, rinse it off under the faucet again, and birth it again. You should be good then.

well i put a little alcohol on a towel and wiped the inside out. I used 3 20oz of bottled dasani water and poured it all in the ziplock, then I put all three cakes in. What i didn't think about was I am not going to know which cake is which anymore. I guess I will be able to identify the strain from the fruits. I got it in the fridge right now.
I'm gonna take it out around Thusday midnight, that is about 24 hrs.

We shall see!

How many days do you think I would see pins in after dunking?

sweet, like i said the cak I will be es were light as fuck, they were so dry! I didn't realize how badly they needed water.

Faster pinning on later flushes huh? Well this will be thier first flush because these cakes were birthed 9 days ago. I am gonna take em out the fridge and back into the FC tommarrow night.

Hopefully a few days after I will see knots if not pins.

here is a pic. They have been in there since like midnight last night.

Is it common to have blue brusing on the cakes when dunking? they all have a few blue spots on em. They will heal back right?
I am gonna place em back in the FC tonight.

Come on pins!

There is absolutly no need to go that those lenghs to dunk.

A pot of tap water (or bottle if your tap water aint that great) is all thats needed, keep the cakes submerges with something that fits snuggly inside the pot like a plate and put the lid on.

No need to put it in the fridge either, cubes are a tropical/subtropical species and doesnt benifet from cold shocking.

we dunk in the fridge NOT to cold shock, but to keep the water
temperature below 40 degrees so bacteria cannot bloom in there.
if you don't dunk in the fridge do so with plenty of ice in the water.
or with running water, but that can get costly with cakes.

No need to go all those lengths??? I put the cakes+water+ziplock bag, how is that going through stuff?

Anyway I birthed the sweeties and they felt much heavyer and I assume more full of water.

They are looking bruised blue in some spots, is this normal for dunked casings?

How many days do you think before I see pins at 100% RH and 68F?]

And last... DO you think I will be able to tell this difference between the 2 SA cakes and the 1 Chitwan after they start fruiting?

Thanx
Katfish
