simple straw question

well it's as simple as this;
does anyone have an efficient method for shredding straw to use as substrate? it seems scissors are dreadfully slow, so i've been doing it by hand, just balling it up and crushing it etc
so to repeat, what's a good method for shredding straw?

an electric chipper/shredder.
It'll run you roughly $150 or so. works like a charm.
I even have an extra new one... forgot about that.
anyway, that's what we all generally use, a chipper/shredder.

You might try a food processor that can cut rather coarsely...
I have never used straw as a substrate, so I'm just firing off.

seems like putting roadkill in a chipper might make a bigger mess than it started out as
annoying neighbor hood children don't bleed tho, we all know that

Just had a thought. If you have a chainsaw or possibly a weed whacker you might be able to do just as well. Back that straw bale into a corner or get someone else to hold it and then go Shawshank Redemption on it .

I use an electric weed whacker with the straw in a tote with the lid on it. I cut a very skinny rectangle out of the center of the lid so I can move the weed eater around in the box to get it all. It takes about five minutes or less to do a 125 quart sterlite container full of straw. I do this right in my living room, since I also live in a condo. There's some mess, but not much. RR

now THAT sounds like a good ass idea
do you trim the weedeater strings short? can a plastic tote take much beating from em?
like i was telling katfish in PM it's a real pain in the ass getting a bail of straw inside of an apartment xD luckily we live in a duplex so we have a ground floor entrance

go buy yourself some large black trashbags. when you go to buy the straw, load it into the trashbags, cover it on both ends.
that way you can easily carry it into an apartment or whatever and nobody will have any idea what it is. plus it helps to keep the vehicle clean that way.

Just a suggestion, I never even trim straw. I just make sure it is well compacted into the container when spawning and don't let any ends stick up. Works like a charm.
