My Computer Fan Setup
    #7636840 - 11/14/07 06:50 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

In addition to some occasional fanning, I decided to rig my FC with a 120mm case fan. I cut out 2 good side holes on the top of one side of the FC and covered them with Tyvek. I then cut a hole for the fan on the the bottom of the other side and covered that as well.

What makes this setup different, is that I decided to wire my own 10min/2hr timer for it (ended up costing more than a store-bought timer, but  it was purely for entertainment and novelty). Figured somebody might be interested.

Parts list for timer:

1 2500 microF capacitor
1 555 IC
5 1k ohm resistor
1 340 ohm resistor
1 260 ohm resistor
1 high speed diode (1N4148)
1 circuit board
- lots of solder and jumper wires

--------------------

Pictures of custom timer for automated FAE coming soon... and of course, some of the musshh.

Thanks bro. I had a rough schematic that I was working off of. I just soldered it all onto a circuit board I had lying around and jumped the hell out of it. Took too many hours. -.-

I had 5 resistors (4260 ohms) running the off time and 2 running the on time (1340). Had a diode making sure the circuit ran one way through the resistors. The timing isn't very accurate because it's not an extremely high grade capacitor, so it ultimately leaks a good amount of its charge. This is fine with me however, because I wasn't looking for accuracy, as long as the damn thing worked. xD

Well played! :congrats:

I thought about doing this awhile back, and a 555 in astable mode was the first thing that came to mind.

For those wanting to replicate this: Nifty 555 astable calculator (Includes schematic)

If you dont have the skills to build a circuit some ebay searching revealed stuff like these:

http://cgi.ebay.com/THREE-TIMER-CIRCUITS-KIT_W0QQitemZ9706423851QQihZ008QQcategoryZ294QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem

It would make automating a fan pretty simple from there...

Thats a nice setup, i like tinkering with electronics and soldering, i may give this a go, i was thinking about putting a fan exactly like that so i could have more regular FAE rather than having to make up for it when im away.

thats a nifty circuit .. I like to dabble in electronics its been awhile
the last thing I did was a lightning strike detector .. it worked great untill I tried to boost the sensitivity . next thing I want to make is a
strike potential gadget .. it uses radioactive isotope from a smoke detector but I need to locate the plans on the internet
points for ingenuity to you !!

If you like electronics, pick up an STK500 from Digi-Key and start learning how to use Atmel AVR microcontrollers.

http://www.avrfreaks.net

You can control just about anything you want to with these. Pretty much perfect for environment control with this hobby... I thought about making some commercially available controllers specially suited for mycology at one point.

Sure, if you didn't want to do the research on microcontrollers, you could probably by something pre-assembled. Like a bank of computer-controller relays...would be serial or parallel based...newer ones might be USB

Usually these things come with (at the very least) a commandline app to flip the relays on or off. You could easily setup the windows scheduled tasks thingy (or cron for *nix folks) to handle that.

The program would not be difficult to write, but it'd be a bitch wiring up that board. xD

Thanks for the positive responses guys. I would have better pictures, but by the time I had taken the first one, my girlfriend's piece o' shit camera ate my last set of batteries.

I'll take some better pics soon once my cakes are pinning in the FC.

Wicked awesome man. is it battery or outlit powered (sorry if thats a dumb question, i know little of electronics) for instance i would never find myself using a circut board "i had lying around" if i have a circut board lying around its because something expensive fell off a rickety stand and shattered when it hit the ground.

Yeah, I wired it to a 9v transformer that used to be a palm pilot charger.

Making printed circuit boards (PCBs) at home is easier than you think.  A laser printer, an iron, some etchant and a Dremel is all you need.

You can make either standalone controller systems, or ones that are programmable via serial/usb/parallel.

Thank you - yes, it's coffee and coir...
