PH concern with 50/50+

alright, so i followed everything that it says on the 50/50 tek
* 15 1/2 cups vermiculite * 15 1/2 cups peat moss * 4 1/2 cups crushed oyster shell * 1.2 cups of hydrated lime * 15 cups of distilled water (1 cup short of a gallon of bottled water) 16 cups = 1 gallon
well, not exactly, i only had 4 cups of oyster shell
what concerns me is that the ph was around 4 when after i mixed it up and added 1 cup of lime. then i added the .2 to the top inch or so of the mix and tested that top layer and it was still at 4
what should i do? add more lime? wait 30 mins then re test?

do NOT add more lime.
your pH testing method is way, way wrong.
get a better meter like a Kelway H2B or some soil litmus strips.

I think monstermitch is telling you your 50/50+ is 'good to go' !
Your PH testing is suspect.
I use the same formula ..... and it works great.

no, not really.
it's not how I would make casing, but that doesn't mean it is bad.
It seems to me that your pH would be around 8.5 or higher with that mix. that's 13% hydrated lime, which is ridiculous. I would only use one teaspoon per cup of peat. so a total of about 15 teaspoons or about 1/3 of a cup. no more.
your peat should be sifted really well before you do anyting to remove all of the woody matter in it. that stuff invites green mold like you wouldn't believe.

I type this all too often.

1.2 cups of calcium carbonate would be about right, but as said, that's too much hydrated lime. If you'll add a cup or two of gypsum, it will probably bring it down enough. I suspect your pH now is somewhere around 9, but it should drop over the next few days. RR
