First time using Cakes
    #7635900 - 11/14/07 04:18 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

Whats up. I birthed my first two cakes and placed them in the FC on 11/05 today is 11/14 and I still see no pins. I waited like 2 weeks for the casing to pop so I am waiting for these.
Do cakes usally take longer with cakes for them to pin, rather than casings.

Here is a pic of the FC setup and the cakes.

10/12/07 Storage bin perite FC constructed
10/28/07 Havested my First ever flush, of PESA!

The cakes don't look rolled. I'd dunk and roll now. They'll probably pin within days if you do.

i don;t have verm, so i didn't dunk or roll. Could i take them out and still dunk now? they have been in open air for like 9 days, is it still ok to dunk them?

Can i just use bottled water to dunk in, i live in a small town where i go to college and i definlty don't trust the tap. Or is there something i can add to the tap to sterlize it?

Yes,you could still dunk them.Dunk them after every flush if you want.Use bottled spring water, and try to get some verm,it really helps.

I am working on the verm I need to find a container to put the 3 cakes in while they are being dunked.

How long should I dunk them for? I mean i know the standard is 24hrs but does it matter that they have been in the open air in the FC for going on like 10 days?

Also how soon after dunking should I expect pins?

I hope dunking works, I would really like to see some other mushrooms growing other than my PESA casing.
The cakes are 2 SA and one Chitwan.

I found the problem!

I took the cakes out the FC, they felt very light and dry, like a cracker, they definitly neede3d some rehydration. I just thought dunking was for achiving higher yields, not something that just has to be done to cakes.
I can't wait to be looking at SA pins and Chitwan pins!

Katfish

I will keep this post updated with the pics as the cakes progress.

two SAs and a Chitwan in there. I am told that I will never be able to tell the difference, even when they fruit.

Do you guys think its possible to identify strains without knowing? I mean the 2 SA cakes have to look very similar when fruiting, I think I will be able to pick the Chitwan out of the three.
But members have told me a cube is a cube and they all look the same, strain names are just fancy marketing. Is that true? I thought some strains were different colors and everything.

The cakes came out the fridge and into the FC today.
There is blue brusing on each one, all in different spots.

Is this common, the blue spots?

Dont worry about the bruising too much.. From what i have experienced it goes away when you get them back into the FC if you have optimal conditions (high enough humidity and FAE) so they dont dry out again. Try not to handle them too much.. and like everyone else is saying.. have patience.. sometimes pins can take time to develop.
