The belief that god is a man
    #7635731 - 11/14/07 03:31 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

Not a person as in human, but a person as in a person that watches over everyone.

Where did this belief come from? I ask a lot of people who believe this why they believe it, and most can't come up with an anwser. Some say it's because it's in holy scripture, the others don't really know.

I know that god is portrayed as a man in the bible, and many other holy scriptures, but what i don't understand is why people believe it to be that way.

I think they refer to god as a "he" in the bible, simply because calling god "it" wouldn't sound good, or like they respected god. My grandmother is a very religious christian, and she sees god the same way I do. The force that created stuff as we know it, and the cycle that we are all a part of. Not a man in the sky.

So why is it that those people believe god to be a man? Is it not just as mysterious how that man came to be compared to your existence?

Not only is the idea of a personal "man" god simple, it's impossible. No all powerful being can exist with the necessary limits being a man places, and I don't just mean obvious limits. If there is a god, there is no way it could exist as any sort of being that we are familiar with. Religious people who hold this belief are unwittingly reducing their deity to the stature of a demi-god, like Zeus or something.

I think most people hold this view because they don't analyze their religion rigorously; they're afraid of what they may reveal to themselves.

Probably due to the fact that women were not held in very high regard at the time.

Well yes, and i figured this has been posted on this forum a number of times before...

I meant more along the lines of, why believe that god is a person watching over us in the sky? as well as a man.

I believe the belief started sometime in the 60s.

And that is perhaps the most absurd statement of them all.

In order to answer your proposed question, we'd need to find out why most societies are patriarchal.
