i shook this jar right after inoculation and was wondering if would be a good idea to shake it again around 1/3 colonization? and then wait for it to fully colonize after that. thanks

I may be incorrect in my judgment of the image there, but to me it looks like there is fairly even growth throughout the jar. Shaking mostly serves to achieve even growth such as that, so if you think it appears even to you at this point then another shake will likely not accomplish much.

yea thats what i was wondering. because the whole point of shaking is to get mycelium distributed throughout the entire jar so that it WILL fully colonize right?
i dont know. ill just leave it alone and see what happens i guess. thanks for the advice though urayasan...

I agree, for that particular jar, if it's like that all over... leave it.
don't shake if you don't have to. nice jar.

I'm a bit on the fence about shaking vs. not shaking following inoculation. At times it seems to me that not shaking, and allowing compatible spores to find each other faster, results in considerably faster growth when all is said and done. But I have also had jars like yours, where they have been shaken and resulted in wonderfully even growth everywhere that fully colonized rapidly. I've also had jars shaken just the same which took absolutely forever, only having spotty growth in a few places. My only guess is that perhaps the spore concentrations somehow affect whether shaking is as effective, I don't really know.

unless of course we're talking about LCs, which should definately be shook up after inoculation. otherwise, learn to make LCs.

here are a couple pics from just a couple minutes ago. like i said earlier, this is my first time at grains and i couldnt find anything in the forum on what a 100% colonized jar looks like. so what do you guys think? does the entire surface have to be covered in white?

I think once it shrinks away from the sides then it's 100% or very close, but I'm not positive.

often when a substrate is at 100% the mycelium will become more rhizomorphic because its shifting into fruiting mode. peep your rhizomes.

Do you plan to case or utilize a bulk method?
