If they'll swing the $50, and you don't already own a copy of the 2003 edition, this is one not to be missed! http://mushroompeople.chainreactionweb.com/product_info.php?products_id=55
Peter Oei's 2003 manual on Commercial Mushroom Cultivation.
I also just bought this book after reading the first chapter when I was visiting the ECHO Library the other day. It has not arrived yet though, but I can't wait, it looked like it had a lot of great advice. http://product.half.ebay.com/_W0QQtgZinfoQQprZ606090
Backyard Market Gardening: The Entrepreneur's Guide to Selling What You Grow (Paperback, 1992) I won a copy of this book at a conference I was at; Sell What You Sow: The Grower's Guide to Successful Produce Marketing (Paperback, 1993) Author: Eric Gibson
Best Price: $11.24 List Price: $28.95 (Save 61%) I read a lot of it, but left it on a plane about halfway through, so I just bought a new copy now, thanks to you reminding me about it...

Yes but like Tea and Coffee, they are different in their content.
Peter Oei's is very much focused on the commercial and business end of things, while Stamets focuses on the mechanics of growing a lot more closely. They are very good companions to have.
I collect books on cultivation, and have stuff from all over the world. It took me a long time to locate a reasonably priced copy of Oei's book - even used they sell on sites like half.com or alibris.com for $75 USD or more. The brand new copies available at the link I provided above seem to be the only US seller I could find carrying the book in stock. It is also less expensive than buying the book from C-Point in the Netherlands, which is odd, as Oei has licensed rights to it's distribution to them...Maybe they are the European supplier and Mushroompeople are the North American distributors. Not really sure, but when I finally did get a copy of the book it was really enjoyable, and I definitely learned some new things, which is what it's all about. Light and Love, JD

Another good book is:
Mushrooms. Cultivation, Nutritional value, Medinical effect and Environmental impact. By Shu-Ting Chang and Philip G. Miles.
It´s expensive, but it´s worth the price.

Are you for real? I bought that book years ago and eagerly awaited it's arrival. I've barely used it since it's gotten here, and consider it one of my poorer purchases. It was written so dryly it was worse than reading scientific papers.
What did you like about this book? Because it's sitting right there on my shelf, and if I need to go take another look at it, I'm game!
It's honestly been YEARS since I've even cracked the cover on that one, and it is in perfect new condition still (which not many of my mushroom books can say that!). So if you can point me to any chapeters or pages that caught your attention, I'd appreciate it. Thanks man! JD

Chapter 2 The nutritional attributes of edible mushrooms Chapter 3 Medicinal Value Chapter 4 Overview of the biology of fungi Chapter 8 Mushroom formation: Effects of genetic factors; breeding Chapter 10 Culture preservation Chapter 12-Chapter 21
It´s not easy to read like Stamets books but it has some good and very detailed information as well as real examples, at least for me that I´m not an extremely experienced superpro cultivator.

I think I'm gonna have to go with the Oei book. I flipped through it at another farm and I was impressed.

Thanks I'll have to take it out again and give it another chance. I may have some super-valuable info right in front of me, and not even know it. You know how that goes. Either way it is refreshing to have another viewpoint, much appreciated man! Light and Love, JD

I doubt you'll be disappointed, because it ties in nicely with business planning software, as it contains a lot of feasibility and production equations that I've NEVER seen elsewhere.
I copy pasted this from Peter Oei and also the table of contents for those of you who have not already seen it
Preface Caught by the mushroom virus in 1985 and later working for the former Mushroom Tower, I was asked to write a practical manual on mushroom growing for developing countries in 1991. When I compiled the first edition, I hadn™t expected to rewrite it for a second edition in 1996 and now a third edition in 2003. Over 6000 copies have been distributed all over the world, both in French and English. Intended originally for developing countries, the book has evolved to its current state. The second book was already distributed more in Western countries than in the third world because of its detailed instructions on growing ‚exotic™ mushrooms. This third edition now gives a detailed view on growing the most important mushrooms of the world. It also covers recent developments in the highly specialized sector of White button mushrooms. These new chapters have been provided by experts in their specific fields: Marc Maas (Cpoint), Luc Klunder (Gicom), and Ruud Thielen (Thilot). Peter van Erp and Anton Sonnenberg, Applied Plant Research, kindly permitted me to use parts of the book Mushroom Cultivation, edited by Van Griensven in 1988, which deals exclusively with White button mushrooms. Lou Hsu (Unicorn), Edwin Blaak (Blaak Exotic Mushrooms Consultancy), Magda Verfaillie (Mycelia) and Hannu Mäkelä (Karela Centre of Development) delivered valuable information on new methods to grow exotic mushrooms on sterilised substrates. Daniel Martínez-Carrera, Institute Micologia Neotropical Aplicada, Mexico, kindly revised the case study on mushroom growing in Mexico and gave his view on rural extension and sustainable development.

Okay I pulled out Mushrooms by Chang and Miller tonight to breeze through it. Firstly it is extremely comprehensive, covering a lot of ground. A lot of the information is very good stuff to know, but it is presented very dryly. If you can get over that, the info in the book is pretty tight.
So I mostly rescind my earlier comments about this book

I used to have Mushroom Biology written by Chang. I tried reading it, but I confess. I'm just a mushroom scientist so most of the hardcore stuff went right over my head. I can understand how his writing is for scientists and academics and not farmers.

LOL! I've read PARTS of the book, which probably goes for every book I own, of which there are thousands. I read a good portion of it way back, and then just skimmed over it last night. That was part of my disillusionment with the book. After paying over $100 USD, it was just really hard reading. Don't get me wrong I have some books I LOVE that are hard reading.
Here's my suggestion for a very hard reading book that has nothing to do with mushrooms, but is written so amazingly beautifully and is so complex in it's presentation of systems of nature, I truly love it. I still have not finished it after three years of owning it, and reading parts of it sporadically. It is WAY to dense for me to read in one sitting. One of those books that you have to sit and ponder each paragraph before moving to the next, and then you get lost in thought loops. I lost my copy once, and then bought another copy online for about $0.75 at half.com. I then found my original copy and traded it to someone at this year's national Rainbow Family Gathering for a Neil Gaiman comic (okay, yes, I like comics still, haven't read many in years, but Gaiman is the Shit!). I think the guy I traded it to is loving it right now!!!!
The book is; Fisherman's Guide: A System's Approach to Creativity and Organization (Shambhala, Boston, 1985)
Don't be fooled by the title. It is not really a fisherman's guide
I found this page; http://www.cosmic-mindreach.com/
the below is copied from it.
The guiding insights: The original Fisherman's Guide introduced how the cosmic order works as explicitly revealed in an awesome series of spiritual revelations described in the book. A way of delineating the cosmic order was visually and experientially demonstrated by these cosmic insights through the medium of the void, embracing the whole of creation.
Practical reconciliation: As a skeptic by nature, and a chemical engineer by profession, this demanded reconciliation with our normally accepted social and scientific frameworks of understanding. The spiritual insights were not the result of religious or spiritual training, yet they embraced both the central essence of all the world's spiritual traditions and also the foundations of our physical and biological sciences. The writing that has ensued has required a lifetime of scientific study and intimate familiarity with diverse cultures and religions of the world.
A new paradigm: In short, a new universal paradigm of understanding, bridging both science and religion, is offered in a way that is not dependent on language. This provides a far more fundamental context that can broaden our horizons and enrich our experience, regardless of our diverse cultural traditions or training. It can resolve conflict in constructive ways by rendering the creative dynamics of all experience transparent. In the process a fascinating new approach to the sciences is offered in a practical way never before imagined possible.
Okay so now that I've gone way off topic...Semi for all intents and purposes, I have really not read that much of the book. It's just slow going, and it's hard to pick the gold from the river there...
EDITED to provde this link; If you are interested in the book I mentioned in this post, check out this page for a really thought provoking and vividly descriptive retelling of the authors transformative experience; http://www.cosmic-mindreach.com/Cosmic_Insight.html it is mostly excerpted from Chapter four of the book.
