If you do nothing else for your country...

please get out there and vote be part of the political process, less than half of our eligible voters use their chance to contribute, and please if you have not registered to vote do so asap. Also, tell a friend to vote, tell a family member; you'd be surprised at the number of people you don't know who don't vote. Imagine if we could get all these people who complain and want change and are out side of the mainstream voting base or just have an issue that means a lot to them to get out and vote according.
P.S. IMHO I think this should be stickied by an admin at least in this forum and really in all of the forums.

How are people supposed to vote when they don't have much to vote for? Show me how to vote for no more bullshit when all the politicians are full of it. This "get out and vote" shit is crammed down our throat as if the problem is all on our side. Give me something to fucking vote for. How am I supposed to vote if I don't want a giant douche OR a turd sandwich?

If you do not participate in the process you still in effect endorse it because you allow those who will participate the opportunity to continue this country down the same path, this is the only avenue we have for change in mindset in government; that is, to elect officials we believe at least address some issue we have and will make good on his efforts to change/improve it. Look at it like this, in a communist country you either don't vote, have 1 person on the ballet, or are strongly encouraged to vote for a person through his militia's ability to silence opposition, now if you couldn't vote wouldn't you want to, to be given a choice in the possessor of powers that hurt you

So in one system I get either a tyrant or a bullet. In the other system, I get to choose between two tyrants and pretend there's a discernible difference.

Then vote third party and express your dislike of the two-party status quo.

Telling people to vote isn't going to solve the problem. The problem is that people, especially the younger ones, just don't care. They feel that the government has already failed them and that is doesn't matter who their elected officials are. The only way to get the younger voters out is to create an issue that holistically galvanizes them. The baby boomers had the Civil Rights movement, Vietnam war etc but apparently the Iraq War, ridiculous drug laws, and social security money they will never see is not enough to get them out there. You better start the draft if you want to get young people to vote.

I would rather a person not vote if they are uneducated.
Just my opinion.

Then get out and vote for a third party candidate.
I'm so tired of the non-voters whining about no good options.
Odds are there's an outsider running in the race that could use your support.
Register and vote for these folks...show the establishment that there is weight out there that they are neglecting...push issues and support them with votes and eventually the system will take notice.

This idea could be GENIUS.
Mandatory voting with a no-confidence option.
Watch 60% of americans vote 'no confidence' in their government...let's get to the heart of the matter...government, it's time for you to go.

I heard that in some countries Election Day is a paid national holiday.
They should do that here, it would encourage a lot of people to vote.

Like Veteran's Day makes people thank Veterans?
Like people remember Good Ol' Abe on Presidents Day?

well, I think if I had election day off:
a) it would remind me of the election
and
b) it would make me think, "Shit, I might as well go and spend 10 minutes voting, after all I'm getting a paid holiday..."
The way it is now, people have to go out of their way to participate in the democratic process, which keeps a lot of people from doing it. If they really wanted to increase turnout they would make it easier for regular joes to vote...

oh yeah, and also I'd like to say:
in a democracy, as long as stupidity outnumbers intelligence, its pretty pointless to vote.
