what sports did you cats do in school?

and what sort of costs did it incur (registration fees, equipment, tournament fees, etc)? did you participate through your school or through private organizations, or both? how hardcore were you about it?
in high school, i identified myself as a wrestler. well that, and skittles. but they were one in the same. i was the wrestler with rainbow colored hair that would kick the shit out of the unsuspecting. seriously... for nearly all my sophomore year, and the first part of my junior year, opponents were always underestimating me because i had like 5 or 6 colors in my hair. until i went to states. then they learned.
i also ran cross country for 3 years, and track for 1, but it was only to get/stay in shape for wrestling.
financial costs were like $100 shoes for each sport, every two years or so. also, sometimes tourneys would cost like $10-20 to participate.
so what about you kids? did you do any sports? was it a huge factor in your identity as it was mine, or was it really just something to keep you active?
if anybody actually replies, it's entirely likely i may use the info in my term paper.

BOXING SON!!! THE ONLY SPORT!
Shit cost me a fortune though, but I can beat some ass if needed. I miss it, i'm too lazy to put that many hours in the gym these days.
I would rather drink beer.

Equipment is expensive. I definitely had to drop money on that(over and over), I played in both off seasons, so I would pay indoor team fees and such. I payed for extra practices and things, not lessons per say, but more like other coaches for things. I also went to soccer camps. It mainly took a lot of time. But I think all in all it was a really healthy thing to do and I think I perform better overall when I'm pretty busy.

I did wrestling in middle school freshman year I did swim team, I had been involved in swimteams since I was like 7 but after freshman year I stopped. I was pretty damn good though. costs were minimal, suit for a season: 30 bucks or so, good goggles 35 or so probably 70 a season wasnt a factor in my identity really at all, it was something I did among a lot of other things

I was mainly a skater for quite a while I was younger, never got uber talented at it but it was always fun.
Then I got heavily into basketball. I ended up being a starting forward/center for a few years in school, really talented actually. It drove the girls crazy for me. I dated every cheerleader in the school practically. And it was fun to be part of a team.
Then I quit the team to play in a psychedelic band and use drugs instead. No more sports after that really.

I used to play tennis a bit in high school but I never made our school team because it is ridiculously good. After I didn't make the team freshman year I kind of stopped playing altogether. I haven't played a whole lot since then although I would still say I like the sport. In fact it was the only sport I was kind of good at. I never really liked sports at all though. I always sucked and people made fun of me so I just didn't like it.

I played baseball from the time I was 6 until I was 19. In the early years I played 2nd and 3rd. As I got stronger I moved to short and I pitched. I played for my high school which cost nothing. I played American Legion in the summers which also cost nothing as we were sponsored by our local post. I played AAU in the fall which usually cost about $150-300 or so depending on what team I played with. All in all I played baseball about nine to ten months out of the year. I also played with and against some of the best players in the state of South Carolina.
As far as equipment goes we would buy a package in high school that would give us cleats, batting gloves, warm-ups, etc...whatever you wanted basically. My glove was about $200 and aluminum bats are pretty expensive too, about $200.
I was pretty hardcore into baseball and I still love the sport. I could have played in college but by the time I was done with high school I was too burned out. But right before I stopped playing I went to St. Augustine, FL for an AAU Fall National Championships at Flagler College and we won. So that was pretty cool.

I played football for 2 years, when I was a junior I switched to running, drug running that is. That was the end of my athletic career, I realized you can get way bigger rushes from selling and doing drugs. probably my downfall. I've successfully worked my way back into sobriety and legitimacy in the last year. I'm feeling pretty good about that. After 5 years of being completely obliterated on opiates and cocaine, it was a tough battle. But I succeeded, after 2 boughts of failed rehab, friends OD'ing and dying.

I played Hockey. It was obvious i played hockey, and it was known i was the killer on defence, but no it didn't play a role in my "image".
It was fun,i got to hit people, fast paced. it's the only team sport I care for.
oh yea. it was technically Private league, but 80% of the league was school kids,so you know. I don't remember the cost. It was mostly equipment money. I had records for most time spent in the penalty box and the most sticks broken each season, those sticks add up. I remember games where I'd brake sticks and i would have to have my dad Go buy a new one in the middle of the game and cut it down in the parking lot, rush it back in. I'd tape it up during stints of the line.

Costs were avergae I guess
IDentity wise, of course it did, I don't think anyone who played sports can say they didn't play a factor in molding them

I lived right next to the highschool I attended, so the track and field girls would run by my house everyday in big groups. Hottest sport chicks by far were the girls who could run like that, amazing legs, pony tails bouncing up and down. Sadly I only dated one of them, she had an amazing body, legs that were so fit, so healthy, perfect ass, perfect everything.... she was the only one of the track girls i met that didnt mind dating the schools acid dealer.:)

I played lacrosse and soccer. I blew at soccer. It was also practically free minus the cost of cleats. Lacrosse, on the other hand, has cost thousands and thousands of dollars throughout the years. I still play. Dues for club this past quarter were $200, that includes the cost of practice jersey, shorts, and tee. I also dropped another $240 I think for a new helmet and a new pair of gloves. Last summer I got a fucking steal from a friend and dropped $80 for a new helmet and a backup stick and some backup gloves. I've bought numerous sticks and gloves throughout my "career", which both cost a little over a hundred every time. I've also attended camps and travel teams/tournaments, so more hundreds poured in there. Definitely well worth it.

in high school, was the lacrosse team through the school, or was it a separate organization? if it was through the school, did they not provide you with a stick and helmet, like they provide football players with pads?

I played through the school and also through other leagues and teams. And yes, they did provide all that shit. In fact, I never bought a helmet til I was out of school, since I didn't have one anymore from the school. They also provide gloves, but they blow. Any lacrosse player who's been playing for a while is pretty much a pretty boy when it comes to gear. I wouldn't be caught dead in school issue gloves. Since I was a goalie the only other two pads I needed were a chest pad, which I have always used the like 20 year old tiny one my brother used to rock, and a cup.

played soccer since i was 7, still do on a regular basis. For about 6 years I played on a club team that traveled all over, my parents probably hated that, cost was ridiculous, id say a few grand a year because the season was 11 months long, we would typically get late feb/early march off before tryouts and would be back on the field. I lettered in lacrosse freshman year of high school, was suppose to be an up and comer . . . then me and my coach got into it cause i was partying to hard and quit the team. But i just switched and played HS soccer instead, chiller coach, and a more fun sport.
And lacrosse, thats an expensive sport. 350 just to be on the team. 100 for helmet, another 100 for stick and head, cleats around 50, all the pads another 100, gloves round a 100. Thats probably 800 a season.
also surfed my entire life, nothing better than surfing. Not a single thing.

wow, really? the school-sponsored lacrosse team had a registration fee didn't provide stick and helmet? was this a private or public school?

Pretty much anything school issued in lacrosse sucked. Unless they were helmets or jerseys. Those are the two most important things when it comes to looking good on the field. The sticks they give you are just ridiculously out of date, coaches usually just buy sticks a few weeks into the season for the new kids that stick around.

let me clarify lacrosse cost from earlier.
Where i lived, lacrosse was not sanctioned by the states interscholastic athletic association, meaning it wasn't officially a school sport. Thus, the "high school" team was a club sport - but represented by the high school, and the state which hosted state HIGH SCHOOL championships . . . even though it wasn't santfioned by the states IAA.

I think it was largely that area. We had a big indoor soccer/hockey thing, and it really caught on big. They put up fliers on the doors and halls at school, and word of mouth carried it the rest of the way. although we had a municipal court and one or two dedicated hockey stores. I think it was a combonation of the city UHL team and local uh.."trend"..orwhatever, it caught on in a big way is what i'm trying to say.
one state from where I was. Now I'm a bit more south nowadays and theres a very, very, very small hockey contingent here, and yet we have a much more popular team down here. Thats why i think it was just an isolated thing in TN.
ramble...ramble.

My favorite sport now is hockey. I like watching it on tv every once and a while.
When i lived in illinois we had a pond in the backyard that would freeze over and play hockey every year. Good times.

man, oh man. i'm getting rather worried about this paper. it's nearly 4am, i'm on page 5. i'm not really worried about hitting the minimum page length as i am about simply completing it and making it a decent paper by thursday. i've been working all night and am still not even through the first quarter of the paper.
the four quarters i've broken it into for my super-simplified outline is: 1) economic costs of children/adolescents in sports (meaning monetary costs, opportunity costs for time spent, etc) 2) social costs (all relatively subjective and case-based.. gonna pull a lot from sociologists in books i've checked out) 3) economic benefits (i figure this will be a relatively short section. will explore the few who make it big, how big they make it, and the probability of making it big. also will mention the well-roundedness sports gives an individual that makes one more attractive on college applications) 4) social benefits (i figure this section will be rather large. again, lot of stuff pulled from the work of sociologists in books i've checked out. not a lot of my own input.) and that doesn't include the introduction, conclusion, or discussion of whether said costs outweigh said benefits.
i'm still only halfway through economic costs... fuck oh fuck.

I played soccer from age 6 or 7 through HS. Costs maybe 100 a year, I did stuff cheaply, but some kids dropped 150+ on cleats.
Ski Team (racing) Probably like 1,000 a year between equipment and passes ect. Again did it cheaply, knew people who spent upwards of 10k a year on the best of everything and extensive camps.
When I suddenly was good at racing (11th grade) my dad spent about 5k the last year on me, went to camp, got really nice top line skis, boots.
Played a small roll for me, wasn't a groupie in sports... still was known as a huge pot head and rolled with my stoner crew, just liked to play sports as well.
