She smiles like Doctor Flox on Star Trek. Yikes!

Hypocrisy.
Dove is owned by Unilever, who also owns Axe. Ever seen an Axe commercial?

It's advertising so yeah, it'a bit of a self-serving hypocrisy.
But the message is still a good one regardless of the source, IMO.

No doubt the message is good. I totally agree with it, though you have to wonder whether the intentions behind it are for the well-being of women's self-perceptions or just to get people to say 'hey, dove is fighting for me. i think ill buy their product'.
The message is good, but the commercial is disgusting.

Our perception? I think you mean YOUR perception? This is only a reflection of you...not anyone else.
Becoming ignorant to the common patterns of human behaviour and perception is not a good idea, neither is failing to observe shifts in cultural paradigm.
If you convince yourself that all of your perceptions depend on you, and not upon cultural influence or outside stimuli that alters your perception, then people can really lead you anywhere they want you to go.

Yet you still miss the most important element of my point: the whole purpose of analysing social phenomena like this is to heal the damage, to discover the tools necessary to help our kids see through it and feel strong and confident. Personal responsibility is meaningless without an understanding of how we are effected by external factors. It isn't possible to be responsible for oneself if one does not understand oneself and ones influences. I have always strongly advocated persona responsibility: this requires understanding what effects one's perceptions.
Yet how can we understand ourselfs if we do not recognise our human nature and cultural influences??
I believe there are many people who would have you become fully ignorant to a common culture or subculture. Take blacks for instance. In my experience there is a phenomena with blacks where they emphasize responsibility of the individual so much, and holding people accountable to each person, yet failing to regard the cultural phenomena that would otherwise help them out of the narrow vision they have. They of course take this opinion exactly because of culture, because they don't want to be recognised and tied in culturally, for whatever reasons. I think because their is the fear of social stigma.
I talked to one young girl, and she told me emphatically "there are no f---ed up cultures. Only people are corrupt. Cultures can't be f---ed up." This is how I remember it to my knowledge. I of course emphatically disagree. This girl is a perfect example btw, a young black woman from ny.
I use this as an example of how people choose to become ignorant of their personal biases and culture that surrounds them.
It's true people see what they want to see, and choose to be blind. The only way to overcome this is to recognize your own bias. This of course ties in directly with persona responsibility.
There are so many different women in this world, so many different people. But there is a common resemblence and behaviour that connects all women, as all men.
