Our perception? I think you mean YOUR perception? This is only a reflection of you...not anyone else.

Of course. I'm unfortunately embedded in the culture I grew up in. But seeing your chains is the first step to breaking them, no?

Not everyone is bound by the same chains...

I didn't think she was ugly.
They sure plaster up her face, though.

Throughout High School and college, I never fantasized about models or movie stars. Only girls I saw in school. I don't think they were airbrushed.

That was crazy! Especially the airbrushing part... It's pretty crazy when you think about it, and compare women you see in daily life, even the ones considered typically hot, to magazine covers. No one lives up to it! Although I don't know why anyone would want to, because real people are so much more attractive than the cartoons on magazine covers. I think a touch of rough-around-the-edges is charming.

I'm sorry, but she really isn't beautiful to me...Much better looking before all the make up and airbrushing.
I personally like a girl with some meat on her bones, ribs poking into me when I hug her isn't sexy to me, not fat by any means, she just has to have some womanly curves. I'm quite comfortable in my sense of reality.

I know what you mean.
For myself I didn't see much change though. I'm not a fan of makeup and don't think often that it makes someone look better. Especially close up.

This kind of thing makes me sick to my stomach.
A lot of girls I knew throughout high school had self esteem issues, due in large part to these bullshit magazines that they read, depicting beauty as something that is unattainable to most women. It's unfortunate, but beauty products are big business, so we can only expect to be bombarded with this crap in stronger doses in the coming years. The best we can do is assure the women in our lives that yes, you're still beautiful, even if you don't look like a porcelain doll (and this problem does apply to men to some degree, but obviously no where near the same numbers).

Yeah, I don't like makeup much either. It makes my face sticky.

I think the real problem exists in not loving ourselves and in comparing ourselves to these fake people. What companies do to images of women is not evil, they are just trying to sell a product.
Where do you draw the line though? Should make-up no longer be used, because when applied, it depicts an inaccurate portrayal of a woman?
Should action heroes in movies no longer be muscular? The list goes on and on.

Uh, the point is not that wearing makeup is bad, but that the total transformation of that real woman in the video, particularly through the airbrushing, creates an unrealistic standard to live up to. One of the consequences is the prevalence of self esteem issues in young girls and women, and a mythical notion of what human beings are capable of looking like.
Wearing a bit of makeup isn't the issue. I wear it myself from time to time, not usually, but for fun once in awhile. The point is not to disallow people to groom themselves in whatever way they choose, but to observe and analyse the social repercussions of the fashion and marketing industries and how they affect cultural values and the way people feel about themselves.

Niam,
I see your point and mine was that airbrushing and make up is one and the same thing. Alterations to the human form which are not naturally occuring.
What about high-end fashion? That is an unrealistic standard in my eyes. Who has that kind of money? I sure as hell don't. Should we feel bad because we cannot afford those clothes?
Do you see where I'm going with this?
*Another thing. We allow for Fashion and marketing to have social and cultural repercussions. We are accountable for ourselves, no one can take away our happiness except us.
