I envy you all. I didn't get a chance to hunt mushrooms, my buddy jed was being a whiny bitch the entire trip about skipping hanging out with blake right away. I'm going there next fall alone.

Got me 6 pounds of fresh cyans today, man they're pretty, hardly any of them were showing bluing/white. Not seeing many pins coming up though.
No cam for a few days, kinda bummed.

I've had pretty good success hunting on the coast during pretty wicked windstorms, so from my experience, they don't seem to mind it much(unless it's a real dry wind).

They don't immeadiately react during a windy period and shrivel up and die. It's prolonged periods of dry weather and wind(a few days) that effect mushrooms, especially small delicate ones like psilocybes.

dang, come to think of it a giant storm that concluded a few days of rain would be great for picking. Think, low visibility, not a lot of people on the streets or in parks . . .
And dang is my patch exploding with pins! there had to be at least a hundred today. They are all in nice tight little clusters too.

I think I may have had my first bit of success today!
Check out these pics and let me know if they are Cyanescens. They were all found in a rhododendron garden in bits of wood chips. Only one actually bruised and it bruised kinda greenish color all around the tips of the cap.
The rest I suspect may not be cyanescens. They have darker colored stems and are not bruising although I'm not sure if bruising is necessary.

The one in the last 2 is indeed a cyan, but not the ones in the 1st photo! Those are the deadly lookalike, the Galerina's, which are easily confused with cyans.
Bruising is absolutely necessary. This is a perfect example of both specimens and you can see clearly why one is a cyan and the others aren't....
Cyans: white stem, bruising, purple spore print Galerinas: orange stem, no bruising, rust spore print

I went on a very short hunt in the dark this evening to check a patch of Cyan pins I discovered last week. I was expecting a nice big cluster when I arrived today, but instead I found that they hadn't grown very much at all.
I suspect that the lack of moisture is stunting the growth.
These are some of the smallest fully mature Cyans you'll ever see...

sheesh...that first photo...the gills are the same color as the cap, no bluing at all....never eat those...psilygirl is right
there's a whole bunch of different little brown mushrooms that can look kind of close to cyanescens, and some of them will kill you
if those are galerinas, that's almost enough for a fatal dose right there. Estimates are about 10, for about 2 weeks of pain, vascular collapse, then renal failure, then maybe you'll make it with liver damage
anytime somebody posts like this in combo with cyans, not quite sure, maybe, that means you haven't gained enough experience to separate them
looks to me the third photo, a close up of cyan, along with the other bad ones
the second photo is a cyan...despite it's being blurry, it's still good enough to tell
oh by the way, alot of it is color, and if a camera isn't good enough to get good color, alot of experienced people can tell that too, which should prompt more questions or better photos

Found my first Cyanescens today after just a fifteen minute jaunt into Olympia. They were just where I'd expect them, hiding in wood chips under a nice big Rhododendren.

Total weight was 60.6g wet. Am I safe estimating that this is about 30g dry?

hmmm...from my experience with cyans and cubies, you wind up with about 10% of the wet weight when they're cracker-crisp dry. So I'd guess more like 6g. Sorry to be a bummer, but I've had that experience too, and then seen what the scale reads...

No worries at all, odds are this load won't last long enough to dry as they'll get gobbled up in the coming week. Plus it's not like there won't be more. Now that I know what I'm looking for I'm sure that I'll have lots of great hauls this season
