Alright, well since this thread has gone nearly completely off-topic, I won't feel quite AS bad about asking this, but, I've noticed, OC, that in nearly all of the threads you post in, you end up going off on wild tangents and making absurd jokes (funny, but absurd). Do you think this contributes to the P&S board, or is this just your own style, or why is it that you do this? I don't mean to judge this and this isn't a criticism or anything, I'm actually curious why you so frequently post about off-topic things.

I suppose it could contribute to the community aspect here, but on the other hand, couldn't you just as easily do that in boards intended for that purpose specifically, such as the pub or anything like that, or even make threads for fun in P&S that clearly are for fun and not for philosophical discussion?

I have posted many hundreds of deep threads over the years and they got very little play. I have found that most folks have a very short attention span and would rather be entertained rather than do any real work. I once started a weekly course when the membership here was much larger. Three participants signed up and two dropped out after the first week, the other failed to get past the first fairly simple exercise.

This is like what Icey pointed out about self-help and fitness books.

It's true, you have posted many wonderful threads, but I dunno, it seems like you're just resigning to catering to peoples whims. Not to suggest that you still don't post insightful and interesting material and topics, but it seems like that has become filler to the random tangents and jokes, rather than tangents and jokes being filler to the interesting stuff. Of course, my perspective could very well be skewed, since I haven't been following posts here for a few months. If you think otherwise, please say something.

Sounds to me like an excuse to digress into a pool of your own uninitiated philosophical mediocrity, while your posts are beginning to reflect an inferiority complex. At least that's how it seems from this side of the internet through my foggy outward-facing mirror.

When I first signed up I liked reading your posts for their sarcastic wit, but now I read you as old, unsatisfied and cranky!

Personally though, I'm not particularly fond of most threads discussing aspects of the forum within which it's posted. They usually resound a level of condescending displeasure at "most" member's failure to live up to one person's standards. This applies to a number of the posts I've made in the past.

As long as you realize the validity and importance of what is being said, you don't have to agree with it.

As opposed to the times when you don't realize the validity and importance of what's being said - when you HAVE to agree with it. :smirk:

The course was not about emulating Swami (Some Wise And Munificent Intelligence). It was a compilation of exercises, thoughts and ideas accumulated over a lifetime. As I did not write them down and I was 'channeling' at the time, I only remember the first one:

Picture your worst enemy or the person who caused you the most pain ever in your life, sitting directly in front of you in a chair. Instead of anger, hatred, feelings of vengeance or other damaging emotions, you are to wish them well; to send them as much love, light and warmth as you would your best friend, family or lover.

Much resistance will arise and must be examined deeply and released.

Repeat with as many people in your imagination as have had negative impact on you.

This is very simple in theory and difficult in practice. We were then to discuss our results among ourselves. Releasing these shadows can free up much wasted energy for other usage.

sounds great
I have a lot of trouble even starting the first exercise
I cant really think of any one I harbor hatred for. I can think of people who annoy and irritate but not much worse.
I'm probably repressing the serious stuff.

In all my years here, I do not remember (could be age-related) a single post wherein someone wrote, "Awesome post! I don't agree with a single thing you wrote."

I think that's because if someone writes a post that you don't agree with, but that post is also extremely well-thought out and hard to contend with, it makes you frustrated and angry.  If anything, your response is naturally going to be trying to tear the post to shreds in order to validate your own opinion pertaining to the subject at hand.  You sure as hell aren't going to lend the offending post credibility by complimenting it.

Once you exercise this freedom you've lost all control over what you do, what is produced, and how it is produced. And in the end, the product doesn't belong to you. The only way you can avoid bosses and jobs is if you don't care about making a living. Which leads to the second freedom: the freedom to starve."

Of course it was what I thought was important, but you miss a critical distinction.

If McKenna says eat five grams of cubes in silent darkness. He is pointing to an exercise that he found important and left it at that. What you learned after going through that door is yours. However, if he followed up with something like, "If you did it right then you would meet your ancestors and fly off in a spaceship," then he is trying to make you like him.

None of my exercises are/were designed to make one a clone of me.

You suggested fasting to us at one time. Please explain how my refraining from food for five days or whatever, will mold me in your image and likeness.
