can a student just be a student?

Morning shroomerites. I went to an 'interview' today if you could call it that - it was basically me being a dumbass and going to a staffing agency for temp jobs. I've done this before, and it's usually the worst kind of work - threw away all their brochure shit once I left. I'm trying to get on the ball and do small odd jobs and work right now, but I really just want to go to school. I'm considering taking out a small student loan to help me through small bills, gas, etc so I don't constantly have to worry about money and trivial shit. I know it's a shitty way to go, but I figure if I can get work a bit further down the road I can make some cash and be ready when I have to pay the loan back. Anyone have any experience/advice on student loans?
Also - if you had to make recommendations on student loans, I'm looking at the private ones - there are a million different kinds and I'm lost on which one to choose? Should I get one through my bank or??

I got a stafford loan, I'm not really sure how the private ones work. If you need money its not a bad way to go cause you can't beat the interest rate. Just don't go crazy with it, I know a lot of people that took out the maximum loan every time and didn't really need it and blew it on stupid shit they didn't need. Some people don't realize you have to pay this back eventually and then they got raped when they realize they have to pay back the $30k they borrowed. I know some people that dropped out and don't even have a dregree to show for their loans that really sucks.
I graduated with $5k in loans nothin to major currently been makin payments for a little over a year.

I would recommend going with Federal student loans as the interest rates are usually more reasonable.
I know plenty of students that don't work while attending college, it may look a little worse when you go and get a job, but shouldn't make much of a difference, especially if you intern somewhere before you graduate.
Good luck.

Right on. Yeah I think it's easier to concentrate on just being a student without a job - a job can be nice at times and help you structure time but at the same time that's time I could've spent for better grades, time I could've spent furthering myself for the future.
Does the federal stafford loan take a while to get? I don't know the ins and outs of it, do they mail you checks or something? Can it all be done online? I have good credit but am in a little debt right now [a grand], do you need a cosigner for the stafford loan? Sorry for all the questions - just never really considered the option.
edit: like you were saying too - I'm all about the internships

I'm sure you can probably do it online but I filled out a shit ton of paperwork. My parents co-signed for mine (I think... its been a while) but I'm not sure if thats necessary or not.
Your credit isn't affected negatively if you owe money ($1k isn't shit) as long you make the payments on time it actually builds your credit.
As others said definitely get an internship it helps a lot. I worked all through school and didn't really have time to get one and when I graduated I took a job makin about $10k less than I should be because I didn't have any experience in my field. So now I'm makin $40k instead of the $50-55k I should be makin. Oh well I got a year of experience under my belt now so hopefully I can land a better job.

The first step would be filling out the FAFSA (Federal Application for Student Aid).
This can be done online at ww.fafsa.ed.gov. You will need to have your tax information and your parents too, I believe.
The whole process will probably take several weeks to complete. The FAFSA page should have answers to your questions.
Internships look really good on resumes, so do student research positions if you can find one in your field

Thanks for advice again guys. I tried the FAFSA my freshman year but because my parents are pretty well off [not the I see any, hence the loans ] I didn't see a dime from that shit. Government is pretty stingy for how much they take from you - it's almost an insult what they spend it on INSTEAD of education But yeah I'll definitely be on the hunt for internships all the time

I have no substantial advice, but I totally empathize with you because I too am an unemployed college kid who's worried about his financial situation
I really should not look like a pothead anymore, I'd probably be able to work

Straight up man. Looking like a scruffy stoner has never helped my cause, but then I haven't been smoking for a month and still haven't landed a job yet. My friend is hooking me up though since his restaurant just fired 2 people and another dude quit - so looks like work is on the way. I remember back in the days when I never worried about a job, and money was the last thing on my mind behind girls, video games, and all that shit. Poof, now they're gone

Good for you, take whatever you can get
The worst part is I have done very little drugging of any sort since I've come here, I'm just incredibly lazy about shaving
