Chitin and fibre don't contain large quantities of Magnesium (8.68%), Aluminum (23.01%), Iron (9.97%) or Silicon (5.57%). I can't be sure the body would absorb any of these materials in the forms they are found in vermiculite, but it's generally agreed upon that consuming them as minerals poses a health risk.
In any case, an extraction is a far more pleasant way to go about it.

Who agreed upon this and when?
The vermiculite industry claims that it is "non-toxic" and "non-dangerous". I see no reason to think that any harm could come from eating and passing undigested verm.

That's because they don't assume you'll be eating it. You claim my opinion has no reasonable basis in fact, then allow me to add a little more detail. From the link I posted previously, vermiculite is made up from 14% Magnesium Oxide, which causes diarrhoea. That alone is enough to put me off.
