Vermiculite is not fit for human consumption. You can however, perform an extraction on them. In my experience, 1 1/2 pint cake is equivalent to 0.5-1g of dry material.

Just remember that your better of waiting till the cakes produce at a couple of flushes before doing an extraction

I've never seen anything to indicate that vermiculite is anything but inert and non-toxic. One industry site describes it as "lightweight, fireproof, non-toxic and non-hazardous."

Plenty of people have consumed cakes with no ill effects, so I'm curious why you think verm is not safe to eat.

But back to the subject, cakes contain such low levels of actives before fruiting as to make it totally foolish to eat them as you'll get no effects.

Spent cakes may contain just enough to be useful, but come on who really wants to eat them? It's just stupid when you have or can produce fruits.

i think if you eat a cake to trip..even if its not going to kill you, you should probably evaluate your priorities. eating a big mass of mycelium to get a mild trip seems like a horrible idea.

This only comes up when someone is too impatient to wait for them to fruit

Vermiculite might not hurt you, but please consider doing an extraction rather than consuming, do you really want to eat mineral insulation?

If the cake has fruited a couple times, do an extraction. If you have got nothing off of it yet, don't bother as the contents will be worthless.

They took it off the market from many of the stores where I live because some studies found that it was carcinogenic or something (san diego). Home depot and many of the local garden stores didnt have it, not saying it was impossible to find, just hard, but there are definitely some health concerns associated with verm.

If you're THAT desperate to trip, you probably shouldn't be using psychoactives. This type of escapism is what leads to destructive behavior and a distaste for reality, if this in itself is not escapism.

Good luck, been there, done that, and I'm still OK, so, yeah, just good luck.

What you're talking about is asbestos contaminated vermiculite.

"some products were made with vermiculite that contained asbestos until the early 1990s, and now vermiculite mines throughout the world are regularly tested for it"

That was from ONE vermiculite mine and those products have been off the market for about 15 years now. Todays verm is not mined from asbestos contaminated mines and is tested for asbestos.

i remember reading a trip report on erowid of a cake eat (4 guys). from what i read, it was an average strength trip but i have no personal experience. i would not relish eating that nasty stuff so i would look to do an extraction. there's a tek somewhere here and also on erowid.

I would do an extraction of the cake if I was you.

*ahem* *Throat clear*

Yepyepyep's Cake Extraction Tek:

1. Take target cake
2. Place in humid terrarium
3. Extract mushrooms from cake when grown
4. Be happy :crazy2:

I have 5 cakes, and this sounds like an interesting experiement to try. No worries, I have two extra syringes and 3 spore prints... so its not like I'm losing anything. But I can't seem to find an extraction method for verm and BRF. Wheres the link at?

I would make a tea out of cakes before id eat them since they have vermiculite.

But then again i would just grow mushrooms off of them and eat those

I made a warm water cup strained about a half cup worth of cake, when I was crumbling cakes to coir for god knows what reason, and I have to admit it was worth it.

At the time I just wanted a little mental stimulation for a carving design, and I got just the vibe I was looking for. It did make my stomach somewhat upset the next day, but worth the trouble.

I have one cake that just feels its about 2 weeks behind all the other 4 cakes and they were all inoculated at the same time. What did you do Glacier? Make warm water, then soak the cake in it for awhile, then drink the water?

It's unfit in the same manner that sand is unfit for consumption. It may not be toxic, but the human digestive system lacks the ability to break it down, so eating it is generally a bad idea in my opinion.

Mushrooms themselves are mostly chitin, which is indigestible. So is fiber and all manner of things that are good for you. Some people even eat sand or dirt on a regular basis and claim health benefits from it. Your opinion has no reasonable basis in fact.
