my radiator exploded,
i replaced it w/ a new one.
car overheated, i replaced the thermastat w/ a new one.
car STILL overheated, i replaced the waterpump w/ a new one.
car STILL overheats. WTF?

im out of ideas.

Squeeze the big houses the lead water in and out of your radiator check to see if they're pressurized. Make sure to bleed the air out of your system too, if you think you did everything right, I would point to air bubbles causing problems circulating water.

make sure there's no air trapped in the system?
thermostat in backwards? (I've done that...)

also is the fan cycling regularly? - assuming it's electric.

and is there any grey gunk under the oilcap - coolant smell like exhaust? could be headgasket.

You might want to try a lower temperature thermostat. I had a 190 in my Camaro, and it would heat up to 190, 200, 210 sometimes more. Put in a 160, and it never goes above 180, EVER.

Check all hose connections, check for leaks, fluid levels, fan function, reservoir levels, etc.

Good luck!

i've been bleeding it. still no go.
im pretty sure i installed the thermostat correctly,
but fuck it, might as well try it the other way.

Sounds to me like an air bubble... that is if you didn't have any overheating problems before the radiator broke. Or if you drove it for a while when overheating you could have broken the head gasket.

fan cycling regularly - yes.

exhaust smell like radiator fluid? - no.

if the water is cycling through the engine properly,
then the engine shouldn't overheat so i dont think its the head gasket. could i be wrong?

Park the car on an incline, or jack the front up. and try to bleed it. My engine is a bitch about this. A blown head gasket wouldn't cause it to over heat.

What are you working on?

Make sure that the hoses are all pressurized. I can't imagine it being anything other than something preventing the flow of water. Make sure your thermostat even opens before you try to put it in backwards. Let the car cool for a while and then turn it on and go hold the hose that returns coolant to the radiator. Wait to see if the thermostat opens, feel for pressure and vibrations.

I might think of more.

No your conclusion is probably correct. A headgasket failure is usually pretty obvious.

Unfortunately I have nothing else potentially helpful to add. :undecided:

Blocked water jacket, but no idea why that would be and it doesn't really jive with radiatior failure imho.

Running lean can cause a motor to run hot, but that'd usually just burn exhaust valves not cause overheating.

Exhaust gas leakage via head gasket failure can cause intermittent overheating even without noticeable coolant loss. Sometimes just at higher rpm's as well.

But that is a excellent way to bleed coolant, with alot of European cars I've wrenched on you must do that or you still get trapped air pockets.

what is the make and model if i may ask?

regardless, in the end if you have replaced all of that equipment and filled your cooling system to the fill, you probably have a blown head gasket or a cracked head.

check your coolant for traces of oil, and your oil for traces of coolant.

okay, so im going to ignore everyones comments
about a cracked head &/or blown gasket.
that is not what i want to hear
& neither does my empty wallet.

i double checked the thermostat, i installed it correctly,
(i didnt try it backwards.)
i checked the belt against the diagram, i installed that correctly.

when i was bleeding the system i noticed the radiator cap
on the reservoir tank spewing water even though the car wasnt that hot.
actually, the cars temperature is just fine until
the reservoir cap vents & spews all the fluid out, THEN it overheats.

so im HOPING :fingers crossed: the radiator cap is broken
& cant hole 15 psi anymore.
i wont know till i get a new one tomorrow.

=/

I hate to tell ya but a broken radiator cap won't cause overheating. It'll cause the coolant to boil away. It's purpose is to put the coolant under pressure so it can't boil until it's hotter than 250F. Just like in a pressure cooker.

If the radiator isn't running dry, the overheating isn't due to a bad cap.

Have you flushed the system with a flushing agent? Maybe there's a clog somewhere.

what if the cap fails to hold pressure?

the temperature is fine until its starts to purge.

no on the flushing agent, what could possibly
be clogged, or cause clog?
even after all that shits been replaced...?
i even stuck my fingers in & around the thermostat housing,
& the water pump housing. nothing.

what if the cap fails to hold pressure?

If the cap doesn't hold pressure, the coolant will boil and not get any hotter than it's boiling temperature. If it's plain water, that's about 212F.

That's on the hot side, but as long as there's water in the system, the engine won't get any hotter. If you run the engine harder, it'll just boil the water faster, but the engine won't get any hotter.

Considering how cheap a new cap is compared to what you've already spent, it's worth a try.

no on the flushing agent, what could possibly be clogged, or cause clog?

I dunno, but I flushed an old engine once and was amazed at the crap that came out. :whoa:

okay right,
but what im trying to say is that not only is it not holding pressure, its not holding water either.
it purges it all out before the engine even hits 200F,
& drains the engine resulting in overheat.
which is why i suspect the cap...

Ah, there you go then. I think you're onto something with the cap.

start the car, leave the hood up, do you anything that sounds or looks like leakage? Then its prob not the cap in all honesty is sounds like a bad hose, oh ya what kinda car is it?

I got to replace a head gasket once because of a faulty five dollar radiator cap. A very expensive lesson.
