I feel like a real geek asking this, as I'm 3 weeks into incubation, but do I need lights for my FC? I've read several teks and watched the famous youtube pftek and I neither read or observed any specific lighting for growing. Honestly, I had planned to grow in total darkness. Does anybody know if they're required? I mean they dont photosynthesize do they? Thanks!

you don't need lights but a lot of people use aquarium lights with a 12/12 light regime (or something similar)
normal sunlight is just fine though IMO

Not sure about total darkness, they need 12 hours of indirect light when you're fruiting your cakes, so i hear.

yeah a 12/12 light regime allows the colonized substrates to pin thoroughly and evenly

Yes you need light, indirect sunlight is fine, but if your grow cannot be left in a room with enough light, then a light is required on a 12/12 cycle.
You will be looking for a light that is in the range of 5000k-7000k temp range.
You can get compact fluerescents that are about 6500k.

More specifically, since most fluorescent bulbs don't list their color temperatures in Kelvin, you'll be looking for a "daylight" colored light bulb. You'll find that your mycelium can convert from it's vegetative to fruiting cycle very evenly an thoroughly when you use bright lighting in those color temperature ranges in a natural 12/12 circadian cycle. (Personally, I've also found that cycling the temperature 3-4 degrees slowly over the course of the day in the same type of cycle helps promote thicker, fleshier fruits as well.)
As for indirect sunlight, keep in mind that the sun itself only produces light in the 5000-7000K color temperature range during the middle of the summer months...

ah, i remember reading that the other weak, someone posted a coloured chart of how the sun produces light over the year.
I really need to get a new lamp fitting for my compact fluerescent bulb so i can start using it again, now winter.
