field capacity hpoo after spawning
    #7627213 - 11/12/07 06:32 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

I pastuerized a lot of material but it seems a little dry so I am adding water at spawning. I get it too field capacity and then spawn, and it is dryer. Which is correct as I am mixing about 20% wbs bagged spawn. I went ahead and added more water till it was at field capacity again. I am mixing about 4 12qt tubs of substrate at a time in a rubbermaid container. Then putting them in the tubs

all apologies. so much for proofreading. I want to know if I am supposed to get it to feild capacity and then spawn. Which at a 20% rate takes it a little dryer then feild capacity. Should I leave it dryer or add some more water?

Always bring your manure to field capacity before pasteurizing and allow it to cool before spawning. I'm assuming you will be spawning with grains, so moisture should be kept at full field capacity.

I only recommend lowering the moisture content of your manure if you are inoculating with a liquid culture, as this will raise or add to the existing moisture levels. Some people do run their manure lower than field capacity with success, so it's really preference. Do be careful though, as having your manure too dry will stop colonization all together.

My shit is always wet, wet ,wet. No seriously, I just started all this, I use my homemade composted Hpoo, when I spoon it to the pan it drips water(not muck) just a drop or so, but my Hpoo is very fibrous. Myc love it. I use a layer of bairly moist verm on the bottom of the pan it makes it all work cool.
