Do I have contams?
    #7627040 - 11/12/07 05:57 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

(Thumbnails, click for bit bigger pictures)
They just started having that odd orange coloring. I'm also afraid there is too much moisture in the jars, which I can easily fix on the next batch if it is the case. Also, since I'm paranoid about contams, how can you easily tell if it is a cobweb or not? Those two jars are the furthest done of four. The have a bit of bad history.

I didn't use micropore tape to seal the injection holes originally. They were shot up 10/20. I switched to a micropore tape cover after being as sterile as I possibly could and there has been a boom of growth until recently it's slowed down. Two of the jars haven't reacted at all.

Also, when I go to shake the jars, the grain that has mycelium growing off it is.. extremely hard to budge, in fact it seems it's stuck together. Could this be a sign of too much moisture, or are these just things a first timer wouldn't know about?

Thanks everyone! Hope to hear good news.

no, but you do have mycellium.

Everything looks normal.
WBS clumps like a mofo.
Nothing to worry about.

Cool, thank you..

Been getting worried about it, it's taken them a lot long than I expected. Gonna ignore them for the next few days, hopefully they will get 100% soon.

I don't know. An unfiltered jar of WBS is sure to be crawling with bacteria, even if it is 98% colonized. Look at those top kernels that are uncolonized. Maybe you got lucky. Open it up and take smell, if it smells like mushrooms you're probably okay. If it smells like mushrooms and foot odor then toss it.
