Intense rivalries in sport.

There was a game yesterday involving my favourite football (soccer) team and our most heated rivals. It's rated as the most intense and passionate rivalry in the UK. Aston Villa V Birmingham. Both from the same city. We hate each other.
Anyways, during the game our fans (in the away section, we were at their ground) were continuously pelted with coins, glass bottles, cans etc etc. The people who were doing it had no regard for the women or children who were also there, but thankfully no-one was seriously injured.
So after the game (we won 2-1, last gasp winner, fucking brilliant), our fans were locked in the stadium until the home fans had gone. Wasn't such a good idea because it just ended up with the home fans hurling more stuff, including rocks, at our fans who were caged up. Yes, woman and children were still present. I also heard about young kids being spat on by GROWN MEN.
There were also reports of our fans being jumped and attacked by awaiting mobs as they headed home.
There's an article here about it:
More than 20 police officers were injured in violence following a Premiership football derby.
All that bullshit aside, it was absolute quality when the final whistle went. Absolutely hostile atmosphere all match, massive boos and jeers everytime one of our players touched the ball so it was extra sweet to shut them up with that last minute goal. The players ran over to where our fans were and started celebrating with them, throwing their shirts into the crowd, etc. I was beaming for the rest of the day.
Aston Villa forever

It's funny when you think of how incredibly trivial sports are, but we can still get riled up.

But it's something to look forward to every week, a chance to experience ecstacy and despair from the comfort of your own chair.

Liverpool/Everton? Or is it Everton/ManU? No, I think it's Liverpool/Everton.

Colorado Avalanche vs Detroit Redwings in the mid 90s-early 2000s. That shit was FUCKING awesome. I had never been apart of anything like that entire my life.

Michigan vs. Ohio State is this weekend, that's always a good one. Ain't no soccer rivalry, though. I wish we had good soccer here.

Florida-Florida State and Florida State - Miami in the nineties were the best rivalries EVER. #1-#2 half the time.

I would love to go to one of those some time. Preferably at Cameron, but I'd accept tickets to Chapel Hill as well.

I've never hated a sport's player like I hated Claude Lemieux.

Hahahaha, to tell you the truth, I couldn't stand the fucker either, but he was on the Avs, so I had to like him, but once he left, I think to Phoenix, I hated the fucker.
On a side note, I remember fucking hating Vladimir Konstintinov with a passion, then he was in a limo accident and became a barely conscious vegetable. Real sad...

As much as I hated Lemieux, I respected the hell out of Sakic (sp?). It was so perfect, both teams were full of thugs, but were led by the epitome of sportsmanship.
Those series were probably the greatest time I ever had watching sports. The goalies fighting was so priceless. I don't think I'll ever see such a nasty rivalry for the rest of my life.

as an american who plays soccer, i have never had the pleasure of getting over the the UK for a premiership match. its sounds really fun, but in a way a little dangerous to get involved in something like what you experienced, not being a passionate fan for any particular FA team.
but I have been at sevral Browns/Steelers games and some Buckeyes/Wolverines games. both at the friendly confines and in enemy territory.
it takes BALLS to go into your enemy's backyard. i have had tons of shit like beer, fists and batteries thrown at me. and when I see steelers or UM fans in my house I return the favor.
its so trivial, yet it bonds a community together "mein Kampf" style

yeah, from what I hear the Villa faithful actually welcomed a new american owner who would pump some capital into the lineup. how has he done so far? cuz the Browns are a mismanaged nightmare for the most part.
