A Question For the Recovering Alcoholics Among Us

I was just curious to hear from those of you who have quit drinking on a couple of issues.
When you quit, did you get a lot of support from people? Did you have to abandon your friends? Are you now able to hang out with friends who used to be drinking buddies? Now that you are not drunk, what do you think of drunk people? Would you have fun at a bar?

Why would anyone want to quit drinking? Drinking is the solution not the problem.

I have one friend that I've known since 2nd grade. BUt we always drink. It's almost as if beer is the third wheel in our friendship.
not to say we would not be friends if one of us stopped drinking, just that a habbit/ritual will have died.

12 Step Programmes work...if the alcoholic sticks with it forever. They never really recover..just stay dry. My bro-in-law has been on and off the wagon for years. He has a sponsor and they attend each other's celebrations...always w/o fire water. He's been hospitalized a few times with this and that complication from drinking.
Pig Pen died of cirrhosis of the liver man...a damned good key-boardist..gone cuz o'the bottle.
I drink in moderation. A few small drinks of Johnny Walker and that's plenty for me. Burns all the way down!

I've never been an alcoholic and I drink rarely. But I don't really see a problem with drinking daily just as long as you don't drink at or before work. If you get hangovers I can see it being a problem...but if you don't then its all good in the hood.

I'm not even really sure what defines an alcoholic. I gues it would be if the drinking plays a negative or disruptive role in the life of the drinker.
However, what is negative can be wasting time drunk.

I used to drink maybe a sixpack every second or third night -- basically every night I had off from work, where I'd otherwise be going to bed sober. I drank for a lot of reasons, the taste of beer not being an insignificant one. This went on for about a year or more.
Ultimately I'm stopping [reducing my drinking to one night a week when I'm going out] because of a few factors:
It's not emotionally healthy. I'm avoiding my issues and wasting my life. It's not financially sound. Beer costs a LOT. It's not physically healthy. Alcohol converts to acetates into your system, and your body is forced to process all of those before it can return to breaking down fat. So when you drink, not only are you injecting the equivalent of a full meal into yourself, you're stopping your body from metabolising it properly for up to 24 hours afterwards. Add fatty foods and a sedentary lifestyle onto that... It's not productive. Instead of trying to fix my life and do things I'd be proud of, I'm drinking myself to sleep every night so I can forget about why I'm unhappy in the first place.
So that's about it. There's no alcohol in my life other than when I'm going out and that's once or so a week, and not in excess. I want to get my life on track and I can't do that perpetually drunk.

I drink every night. I can't remember the last time I haven't gotten drunk. I just picked up a six-pack of Peter's Brand Dutch Classic (16 oz cans). I don't think I could stop drinking if I tried, but I don't really feel like it's effecting my life negatively in any way so I don't feel a need to stop. Infact, I feel my life is better because of drinking. I have tons of friends, I'm good very sociable, and I'm always having good time because of it. I think that alcohol can be great thing if its used alright. I used to have a problem with it but over time I figured what I needed to change about my drinking habits and my life's been great since then. The only down side is that beer is so calorie heavy. I work out every day now though so that no longer is a problem either.

Si Senior, an alcoholic is someone who's life is unmanageable b/c of it regardless of the amount. Loss of job, marriage, damage to organs etc.
An alcoholic who is "on the wagon" is called a "recovering alcoholic".
Wasting time is a biggie with or without drink...think... So what am I doing here? lol
