Flies in San Pedro soil.... How to get rid of them?
    #7625721 - 11/12/07 01:31 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

Small flies are breeding and coming from the soil in a San Pedro cuttling potted about 2.5 months ago... Very annoying little pests. Any idea how one could get rid of them?

Was thinking about changing the soil and re-planting the cuttling, but won't that harm whatever roots have started forming?

Cheers,

n

might better check and make sure the base isn't rotting. did you keep the soil real dry while rooting? allow the cut to callous over well before planting? keep it in a warm place? i think it'd be worth changing the soil to check on the base. 50% pumice or perlite in the soil mix would be advisable. in most climates, these cacti need very little water and can go for long periods without any.

Proably fungus gnats in which case theres probably fungus growing in your soil.

For any other plant I would say re-pot and rinse the roots off, I don't know if that's safe with a cactus tough.

You might be over watering if you have fungus growing in the soil.

sounds like u are keeping the soil too moist and the fungus gnats have moved in... if its a cutting that has only recently begun to root u shouldnt be watering much at all...

if the soil is dry then its probably not fungus gnats... u could repot the plant into fresh soil, just be careful not to damage the roots and it will be fine...
or perhaps put a layer of diatomaceous earth on the surface of the soil, that will PWN anything living in the pot...

Judging from your responses I am positive the issue is that I have been over watering.... however, the top layer of the soil is dry.

So it looks like my options are to either re-plant in different soil or just to stop watering for a while?

Thanks,

n

I'm guessing that DE can be found at any plant store or maybe even walmart? Is it expensive?

I've bought cactus potting soil several times with these gnats already in the soil. They're become a part of my house over the past few years. Every time I change my light bulb theres tons that died up there. Little bastards!

How could I tell if I have root rot? Is root rot something that will take care of itself if I stop watering for a while or should I dump the soil, check, and re-pot?

take the cactus out of its pot and check the roots, see if they are healthy...
root rot is a pain as eventually it spreads from the roots to the cactus...
just make sure the soil is totally dry before watering, a cactus never died from lack of watering
