I'm checking out
    #7625508 - 11/12/07 12:21 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

My girlfriend is gone
my drivers licence is gone
my house is gone

I'm leaving. I met some street kidz, and have been chilling with them on and off for a week or two. Camping out with them, and enjoying these new freedoms has been one of the most eye opening experiences of my life.
I'v decided to hop a train, and travel the country. I will be departing in a few weeks. I hope i find happiness in my journeys.
Wish me luck.

Good luck, most certainly.

Although this opportunity was gained in not the best way, I hope you take advantage of this time and do anything you desire.

I wish I could take a few months off of "life" aka girlfriend, job, bills, debt, etc.

Enjoy it.

yea, i'v been cutting way back on all that stupid stuff. Its the reason i lost all my shit in the first place. I don't see this as like a sad last resort thing, rather an opportunity to experience life more fully.

Anybody else done the hobo thing? Any advice for a bum in training?

wow...an aspiring bum. you must really be down on your luck man.

my only advice for you is to go somewhere warm. it's getting cold out there, and bums freeze to death all the time. i have a friend who is homeless (not by choice) and addicted to drugs and his life pretty much blows. i let him sleep in my car the other night because it was freezing outside. it was really pathetic. why anyone would choose such a shitty life for themselves is beyond me.

good luck hitting rock bottom. maybe you'll bounce.

eh, thing is i just want to GET OUT. Being in this town, around these same people is driving me crazy. I'v always wanted to travel.
This sounds like a really fun way to do it. I enjoy the people i'm with emensly. They are a cool bunch of kids, and have the experience to show me the ropes.
I don't think its gonna be all that hard, and if i don't like it, i can always come back and be exactly where i left off.

i have minor hobo experiance, no rail riding.
i would say the main thing is most intentional hobo kids i met had alchohol and drug problems, if you're going to be around those people don't fall into that trap.

otherwise have fun.

bakery dumpsters can always be counted on, and if you can find a supermarket thats not closed trash compactor style you're set.

also always be friendly to everyone you meet because you never know how they can help you.

uh... get some axe body spray and don't let it run out, if possible have one thing of clean clothes in a sealed plastic bag in case of emergency need to smell civil.

socks are cheap, like .50 cents a pair from walmart...

uh what else.

if someone lets you stay at their house, always do their dishes while they're not around without telling them beforehand. they will think you are some sort of saint. (cooking and other forms of cleaning are not as effective)

keep warm is a big one... there is always the pain in the ass bettween lugging around heavy clothing/blankets or freezing...

if you're hanging out with these kids and they turn shifty on you, be prepared to leave their group as quickly as need be.

in my limited experiance hitchhiking doesn't work unless you're a girl.

i never used money when i was hobo-ing, but from what i've seen its better to go the proffessional hippy route and learn some minor skill like making hemp necklaces or shitty jewlery and selling it, rather than just spanging all the time.

edit: if you get super bored, reading in borders is a good way to kill time or stay out of the rain

if you're ever in albany stop by

Well i met his girlfriend Clover from the show. She said something like
"yea a spacebag!" and i was like, "dude i know you, your a famous alchy"

Get a crew change if your hopping trains.

do you live in marin???
thats a HUGE LIE

SF is hobo freindly to an extent. its more like theres just a shit ton of homless, not so much a freindly environment.
Marin you will get put in jail. almost ashuradly. unless you find a good place to crash most of marin is not very compatible to the lifestyle you are trying to lead.

people in my home town..er...pride themselfs on there community. and "blighted influences" (homeless/ addiccts) are constently being swept off the streets.
be carful in the bay
call me up if you are there around the hollidays

If you ask someone for money and they start yelling at you, don't retaliate.

Health food stores seem to leave stale food outside more often than other stores.

College towns have an abundance of empty cans.

Asheville, NC is great during the spring/summer, you would have a hard time ruffing it during the winter there. Great homeless/hippie/drug-rehabiliation vide there though.

Be well brother.
Trust your instincts. Try to avoid falling into the using and abusing game...
Stay away from sketchy fools.. seriously. Most hobos can be very chill but many are not and some violent..Travel with trustworthy others whenever possible.
Make sure to eat and drink. I'm sure you will learn some of the tricks of the trade on the road.. as said.. bakeries/supermarkets are always good scores especially at the end of the day. Also don't be afraid to hit up starbucks and bagel shops and other similar places right before they close and ask for stuff.. they usually throw away a ton of stuff every night that didn't sell that day. There's also soup kitchens in most cities.
As mentioned, hitchiking is not very reliable unless you have tits. Odds are much higher of being picked up if you have a big backpacking bag though..
Try to avoid any incidents with police..
Stay Safe. And don't go too far north.. winter is coming.

Every city has a public library with internet access.

Keep us posted here on the boards.

Good Luck.

If you do the Asheville thing let me know and I'll swing into town and treat you to dinner and maybe a show at the Orange Peel.

have fun freezing and being poor.

go back to the parents grand parents anything. Your parents would rather see you with them then homeless riding trains. No matter what.

My sister was homeless for 2 years living with friends and on the streets. She ended up in Vancouver with a bunch of idiots and died from drug abuse.

Please rethink what you are doing, its fun until you end up broke, starving and frozen. No matter what group of "kids" your with.

Wow...congratulations, Dreamer.  I'm glad you're getting out of that town and going somewhere new.  You're going to have a lot of amazing experiences, just please don't die or get a STD or become a greaseball addict.  I'm just echoing what the others have mentioned, but I truly mean it: protect your body.  I love you and I'm proud of you for taking this step.  Just go for it, stay alive, stay (mostly) clean.  Urban survival...you've always had a thing for each other.

The rest I will say to you in PM...but lots of

Awesome man - awesome.
I've only caught out once with some other people but've hitched a whole bunch, much less than I'd like to. Spent three months this summer on the road with a pack - already regret coming back.
It's a hell of a thing.

Don't go to Asheville this time of year. I hitched down there this summer and it's an awesome place worth checking out, not this time of year imho. There's too many homebums bushbeaters and crackheads stressing the system, the law's beginning to crack down on transients - I heard they been handing out citations like mad.
