yeesh. I'll try to be carefull with the drugs. and i see what you mean. I met one of the chicks from intervention. You remember one of the first episodes with keley? the guy that was an alcoholic, and went to rehab to get his dog out of the pokey? Well i met his girlfriend Clover from the show. She said something like "yea a spacebag!" and i was like, "dude i know you, your a famous alchy"

Get a crew change if your hopping trains.
Shit man, its getting cold to me riding freight, especially for your first time. Steep learning curve... goodluck. *gulp*
(ive put up a couple posts about train hopping, if you search my user name.)

do you live in marin??? thats a HUGE LIE
SF is hobo freindly to an extent. its more like theres just a shit ton of homless, not so much a freindly environment. Marin you will get put in jail. almost ashuradly. unless you find a good place to crash most of marin is not very compatible to the lifestyle you are trying to lead.
people in my home town..er...pride themselfs on there community. and "blighted influences" (homeless/ addiccts) are constently being swept off the streets. be carful in the bay call me up if you are there around the hollidays ill be home too

If you ask someone for money and they start yelling at you, don't retaliate.
Health food stores seem to leave stale food outside more often than other stores.
College towns have an abundance of empty cans.

Asheville, NC is great during the spring/summer, you would have a hard time ruffing it during the winter there. Great homeless/hippie/drug-rehabiliation vide there though.

Be well brother. Trust your instincts. Try to avoid falling into the using and abusing game... Stay away from sketchy fools.. seriously. Most hobos can be very chill but many are not and some violent..Travel with trustworthy others whenever possible. Make sure to eat and drink. I'm sure you will learn some of the tricks of the trade on the road.. as said.. bakeries/supermarkets are always good scores especially at the end of the day. Also don't be afraid to hit up starbucks and bagel shops and other similar places right before they close and ask for stuff.. they usually throw away a ton of stuff every night that didn't sell that day. There's also soup kitchens in most cities. As mentioned, hitchiking is not very reliable unless you have tits. Odds are much higher of being picked up if you have a big backpacking bag though.. Try to avoid any incidents with police.. Stay Safe. And don't go too far north.. winter is coming.

Every city has a public library with internet access.
Keep us posted here on the boards.
Good Luck.
If you do the Asheville thing let me know and I'll swing into town and treat you to dinner and maybe a show at the Orange Peel.

have fun freezing and being poor.
go back to the parents grand parents anything. Your parents would rather see you with them then homeless riding trains. No matter what.
My sister was homeless for 2 years living with friends and on the streets. She ended up in Vancouver with a bunch of idiots and died from drug abuse.
Please rethink what you are doing, its fun until you end up broke, starving and frozen. No matter what group of "kids" your with.

Wow...congratulations, Dreamer. I'm glad you're getting out of that town and going somewhere new. You're going to have a lot of amazing experiences, just please don't die or get a STD or become a greaseball addict. I'm just echoing what the others have mentioned, but I truly mean it: protect your body. I love you and I'm proud of you for taking this step. Just go for it, stay alive, stay (mostly) clean. Urban survival...you've always had a thing for each other.
The rest I will say to you in PM...but lots of

Awesome man - awesome. I've only caught out once with some other people but've hitched a whole bunch, much less than I'd like to. Spent three months this summer on the road with a pack - already regret coming back. It's a hell of a thing.
Don't go to Asheville this time of year. I hitched down there this summer and it's an awesome place worth checking out, not this time of year imho. There's too many homebums bushbeaters and crackheads stressing the system, the law's beginning to crack down on transients - I heard they been handing out citations like mad.
