Amazonian Cubensis Diary - First Timer

Hey guys, new to the forum and growth of mushrooms. I understand the concepts of cultivation except for one small detail... dunking. Is it necessary? Or can it be done without? Also, during the incubation period, is warmth a must? what is a good method of creating said warmth, i want to avoid an electric blanket, as they are an enormous fire hazard...
Thanks guys...

welcome to the forums dunking isnt necessary but it increases the yield of each cake and allows you to have numerous flushes. warmth is necessary during the incubation period, if its not the right temperature the mycelium will grow slowly, too hot and it will die. the best thing is to use the Tub-in-Tub method, even easier is to place your jars in a warm cupboard over the refrigerator or in a closet or near a heater, etc.
ps use the search feature, it really helps

Welcome. Drunking is not necessary, however it does help a great deal from what I've seen. Incubation, yeah warmth, I'd say 75 to 80 degrees. I have an LC incubating right now at about 78. Used a cheap $7 fish tank heater inside a big clear tub w/lid, with about 2 inches of water inside it. I set my jar of LC in there, the water goes about 1/4th of the way up the outside of the jar and keeps it nice and warm. I put a big blanket around the outside to block light and insulate it. It isnt the best way, but it's all I could rig up. Hope this helps!

It's just like the story of the grasshopper and the octopus. All year long, the grasshopper kept burying acorns for winter, while the octopus mooched off his girlfriend and watched TV. But then the winter came, and the grasshopper died, and the octopus ate all his acorns. Also he got a race car. Is any of this getting through to you?

That was a lot of help in fact. Thank you, i will likely pursue the tub-in-tub method, and another question i have to ask: How much space should i leave between the cakes top surface, and the lid of the terrarium/fruiting chamber?

I'd say at least 5 inches. Try to give them as much room as you can though so they can grow how they want to.

At least 5 inches, damn, that's like 4 cakes per 50qt terrarium.. lol I've heard 2 inches should be ok, I'm simply going to put them almost next to each other and have like 8-12 cakes in my terrarium. The shrooms have no problem growing in all kindsa weird ways in the wild, not to mention alot of them sibe by side in casing so I don't think it'll be much of a problem. If they touch something, they find a way to grow another way, nature is pretty resilient.

The 5 inches is the height difference, not the space between the cakes, for that i am doing like 2 inches...

water is the liquid of choice for dunking . and you are dunking colonized cakes into water for 24 hours to rehydrate them do this after birthing and between flushes. also you can dunk other colonized substrates after flushes

thanks for the reply! I love how forum members treat eachother with respect(for the most part it seems) on these boards.
Is dunking necessary? 100% humidity is not enough for moisture?

Its not nessesary but is worth doing, soaking your cakes in water for 24 hours rehydrates the cakes, the humidity in your FC provides extra moisture and helps keep the cakes from drying out.

dunking between flushes replenishes the cakes water supply if you dont dunk then your harvest will be noticably smaller, and you will have less flushes too
basically, if you want to maximize how much your cake produces, then dunk after birthing and between flushes
ps the cake method is the most basic and easy method, but it has the least yield compared to other methods, so once you get cakes down, maybe youll want to research other methods.
personally, im fine with cakes, I only grow for myself and dont want to spend too much money or time, so I stick with PF tek
