Amazing A380 Brake Test!
    #7624510 - 11/12/07 04:16 AM (16 years, 2 months ago)

Wow, and I thought the breaks on my little airplane get hot during landings!

This is a worst case test simulating an overloaded A380 applying emergency breaking. The total dynamometer energy is 125.2 megajoules and the break absorbs that at the rate of over 5 megajouls per second!

...amazing? I have no idea how to put that into perspective. Maybe give us a well thought out analogy?

It is enough energy for a Prius to drive a bit more than 25 miles.

Well, that was f'n sweeet....!
****goes in for a third view****

I wrote down a question a few weeks ago that seems a little silly to me (realistically),
but, is there a way to "capture" or recycle the energy wasted while braking in a car....?

Are they the objects you really value? If they are not, you are cheating yourself. I don't meant that if you chose to pursue the objects you most value, you will attain them; of course not. Your experience will tell you that. But success in getting after much labor what you really don't care for is the bitterest and most ridiculous failure." -George Santayana

In electric cars, we can use regenerative breaking. Basic idea is that you turn the electric motor into an electric generator (charging the batteries) when breaking. It works really well to bleed off most of the cars velocity, but becomes useless at very slow speeds. (You still need traditional breaks to come to a complete stop.)

It is enough energy for a Prius to drive a bit more than 25 miles.

It's also the equivalent of stopping a Prius traveling at 1,700 miles per hour. :whoa:
