hi im completely new to mishroom hunting and would appreciate all the help i can get. i found these today in some soil next to a fence. it has been raining over the last few days and the sun came out yesterday. i found these on the gold coast, qld australia. the gills are dark brown/black. the stem is whitish, pretty fragile. the cap is brown in the middle then fades to white and then brown on the very edges. i believe they mite be Panaeolus cyanescens. anyone have any idea what they are, or whether they mite be active or poisoness? and if they are active what the recommended dosage would be? thanks.

Hey mang! Those ain't panaeolus cyanescens. Probably some type of psathyrella. Look in cow or horse pastures for cyanescens growing directly from the paddies, assuming they do grow in your area. Sporeprints for pans are black, and cyans should blue very noticeibly. Good Luck!

If they are Pan. cyans they should bruise blue. They look like some sort of Psathyrella to me. Did you spore print them?

Black print, eh? the mushrooms you collected arn't panaeolus cyansescens, but psathyrella, which can have a nearly black print.

Definitely not active!
Some psathyrella species are edible, but unless you know it's exact id it is best not to eat it.

LOL. Being edible and being worth eating are two different things!

A field guide and a handlens makes it a lot easier to hunt, especially if you are looking for actives. You can disregard what you don't want outright without even having to harvest it sometimes.
