Coir/coffe to case or not to case?

Using rye grain spawned to coir/coffee/gypsum should I even bother with a casing layer? I was thinking like a mono-tub with a little added humidity, and just laying down a little moistened verm on top.
Anyone have any ideas? I am looking to cut time off after waiting for bulk to colonize. Let me know what you think would be the best/fastest route. Thanks in advance.

casing's definitely worth it, and it's only an extra week to add one layer

I rarely case my WBS + Coir bulk, but if you're doing it in a monotub you will have to lay down something on the substrate to hold in humidity and initiate pinning, otherwise it will take much longer than casing would to actually fruit.
I used to use a piece of foil laid on top, but lately I have switched to using wax paper which seems to work better. Just place it directly on the area you want to pin, don't seal the container with it. You will probably want to lift this and fan it slightly once a day, but I've gotten away without doing that and still had good results.
I should add, you probably want to replace the wax paper every few days, as it is paper and I have had it get contaminated if left soaking in there for a week.
I hope this helps.

Well, I never case anymore. I did, until after my first flushes, I had gaps to patch and when I did it always had probs getting fruit there again. I felt I had a lot less performance because of side pinning and post-first flush output with a casing layer.
Regarding colonization times, the biggest improvements to my growth have been with work on maintaining the best humidity and temp for my strain/s/species going. I.e. I have followed 3 strains through three cycles, and I have tried getting spawn to colonize using 75,80, and 85 degree temps the first time. Currently my area for research can only be had at about 75-80, mostly on the low side. So, I have also concentrated on improving my moisture methods, mainly because I personally was having nothing but side pinning with casings a lot also, and I was having trouble with my humidifier accurately keeping the correct rh. Now I use the wrinkled wax paper over my sub in the container, and keep the surface evenly moist and fanned every two days. I store them in my hc with humidity running but no fae until knots form and I have to remove the paper.

My experience has been that I get MUCH better yields when casing 50/50+ compared to no casing layer.
YMMV.

Coir doesn't seem to hold moisture quite as well as some other bulk substrates, and for that reason, I always recommend casing adding a casing layer. It only adds a couple days. Remember, patience is a virtue in this hobby

i agree that you get a much higher yield if you do case...
but really, just HOW many mushrooms do you need to keep around for personal use?

The more you get out of a single grow, the less time you have to spend growing...

isn't growing more than half the idea..crap if I didn't throw the dang things away ..what would I do with em..I grow cause I enjoy watching different teks and how they produce.
If I were growing just to have shroomies I could have stopped right after my first monotub..
If anyone just want to grow mushies for use then I suggest a monotub--two flushes off coir and coffee got me 120g dry..I would think that would last plenty of time, pending how much you trip.
So I'm gonna suggest if you in a hurry to start trippin dont case. If you want to be able to wait to grow again then case..

Well I took these

and spawned them to bulk coir/coffee/gypsum in trash bags, inside the tub, keeping the room at 80 deg.

There are two bags side by side, so One half I am going to case, the other, I am not.
This way it is done in the same chamber, and the same bulk batch, so I can compare speed to final result ect.
Thanks so much for all of your info guys. Valid points on both side, so as usual with this hobby I am just going to have to see what works the best for my particular situation.
Thanks again,

these were R44 on rye spawned to coffee/coir and cased with peat/verm.

Nice, and thanks for the pics. I think I am sticking to the idea of doing them both side by side, one with, one without. Then we'll see.
