Edible tree mushy
    #7623779 - 11/11/07 09:52 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

My family has been eating these for years does anybody know what they are?

They only grow on cottonwood trees. Near the Sacramento delta in California.

Looks like an oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus.) They grow on hardwoods, and one of the preferred hosts is cottonwood.
Nice find!

some type of Pleurotus. Related to Oyster mushrooms, but not sure what species it is.

Thank you all very much, Worried me my family was picking and eating wild mushrooms without even knowing the species.

I automatically thought oyster mushroom but are they all supposed to smell like rotten fish? Could just be the tons of chemicals and bug killers he sprayed on the tree i guess..

Oysters shouldn't smell bad.
HMMMM......if they smell like rotten fish, why are you eating them?

cottonwood tree, and i've never eaten any, at least that i can remember. My family alwasys talked about the tree mushrooms they gather and eat and finally my father showed me some. It wasn't too bad of a smell....like after you handle fish and you can still smell a trace of it on your hands....identical. Like i said the only ones i found were on a tree that had been saturated in chemicals and bug killers to remove alot of bees..
