What if you are unable to use the sun as the light source? Would any 5500k balanced bulbs work or would one need more specialized grow lamps?

I like to use fluorescent tube lights on a timer. If you go this rout you need a light with a light temperature of 5500k-7500k

Fluorescents always work the best.. If you can get a blue light fluorescent... Even better. If you want something cheap and easy... I used to use 20 watt blue incandescent bulbs from Kmart... These are all suitable.. If you use incandescents, don't get anything over 20 watts and put them 2-3 feet above your casing.. Hope that helps

"blue incandescent bulbs" Are you talking about those 'daylight' balanced bulbs or simply blue colored bulbs that one would use to get blue light? Would one be able to find the daylight florescent bulbs at any home store like Lowes or Home Depot or you snag them from garden shops?

Light is not as important as allot think it is.. Just the blue colored bulbs work for me.. I use them on top of aquariums and they don't get tooo hot. If it's cold.. You need to heat the place up with something more than just a light source... You needs a space heater if it's THAT cold.

2-3 above casing? Why not put them as close as possible? The lights themselves shouldn't get hot if very close and not touching.
there are cool flouros and warm flouros. you want cool. most likely not daylight. cool = more blue, warm = more orange
you want a high K temp as well, 5000-6500, the higher the better

Nword, didnt i correct u on another post.
Yes fluerescents work better.
But
Its not the colour of the light - its the colour temperature, in kelvin,
5000K is okey, 6500-7000k range is pretty much spot on.
Im not rabiting on anymore about this subject, i have answeredit on several ocasions.
Use the search, u will find plenty of information on lighting

don't use incandescent lights, there the worst possible light source. You can get 2foot for about $20-$50 at homedepot or online. The best fluorescent lights to use are T5's and T8's but T12's work good too. and make sure you get the right bulbs 5500k+
I use one two tier T12 and a single tier T5 both on the same timer.

In color temperature terms 5500k is 'cool daylight' or so I have been taught. I have no experience with fluorescent bulbs up to this point and haven't a clue if I can buy specifically rated color temp bulbs at home depot. I guess I'll take a look tomorrow. Thanks, this all helps. -SFsorrow

Can we get over ourselves please.. If I'm getting good results over here.. Then I can't honestly say you've "Corrected" me.. We all have different teks and quirks that work better for us... I'm just trying to hand out ALL the options. I know temp range is more important than color.. That's why I said nothing over 20 watts for incandescent...... And blue, not only is it quieter... But it stays cooler too.. Maybe the guy doesn't want to spend 20 bucks on a light source... Sorry I ruffled yer feathers.... I'm sure you didn't really "HAVE" to answer this persons question if you were that worn out by it... Just another option I wanted to hand out... Thanks for being peachy. X to the Ooooo

There is a differnce between a blue tinted light and a light with a blue spectrum. A blue tinted light is useless!!! for mycology. You need a ligh with a blue spectrum witch is between 5600k-28,000k. you usaly can only find fluorescent light bulbs with a range of 5500k-7500k
