Excerpts from "Amazon Magic"
    #7622157 - 11/11/07 02:14 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

"Amazon Magic" is a biography of an accepted 'authentic' Amazonian shaman, Don Augustin Rivas Vasquez. He studied under the tutelage of his herbalist grandfather, a tribe of headhunters for a year; under several ayahuasqueros, bancos and brujos and spent several years alone in the jungle teaching himself about various plants.

"Many illnesses are caused by the tropical environment of the Amazon. One of these is called chirapa which occurs when there is a rainbow in the sky and a fine rain is still falling. If there is a puddle on the ground containing this powerful substance from the rainbow and one steps into it with any small cuts on the feet, it will cause the feet to become swollen and inflamed."

"I remember the wake of my uncle Alejandro. He had been bitten on the little toe by a snake. He was not affected negatively, but he wnet to a brujo for a cure anyway. My uncle was a young man and he continued having sex with his wife after the snakebite - something that could cause death before he was completely healed. Nobody could cure him and he died.

If you catch a snake right away after the attack and kill it, you are more likely to be cured.

Many times ayahuasqueros would sing their magical songs for people with snakebites, but most times this wouldn't cure them."

As a young boy, Augustin and his sister saw their uncle who was far away at the time.
"My aunt Isabel asked, "You saw Carlos?" "Yes", we replied. She then became very sad because if one sees the spirit of an individual, it means that person is going to die.

Our uncle Carlos died six years later."

"When we respect the spirits and ask for their help, they always come. The Yacurunas from outer space come with powerful energy to heal any illness."

"During my last return trip (to Iquitos) after selling pineapples, a river dolphin jumped into my boat. I had heard tales from fishermen that sex with a dolphin is more gratifying than sex with a woman. There I was in the middle of the Amazon (river) with a dolphin in my boat - a dolphin with small breasts and pubic hair just like a woman. So I took off my pants and had sex with her. Afterwards we both fell asleep. When I woke up, I realized I could have died being alone there with the dolphin for about two hours. Many men have died in sleep after sex with a dolphin; it's important to have somebody there with a belt to hit you and wake you up. Luckily I survived."

Later in the narrative, while living with a primitive tribe, Augustin admonishes the members for being ruled by superstition and not being in touch with reality.

And do squeeze the dolphin, but always have a sitter to whip your ass awake after you and the cetacean smoke a cig and then doze off.

I think Shamanism is fairly useless to most of us. Don Juan had little use for shamanism proper and I do not either. That Shaman and the Priest are for those that choose to give up their power and let another determine their truth and path. Sheep in other words.

You challenged me to respond to your thread about a 'real' shaman Orgone, but I can't. I have absolutely no context here, just snippets you found funny from a book I haven't read. There's no ethnology to draw on in order to cast light on the meaning and context of his statements. So what are you trying to prove? That people who don't have western ideas about medicine think wierd things?

Note the empirical understanding of the fact that stepping in a puddle in the jungle with cut up feet makes you sick. Yeah, there's some mythology overlaid, but when you strip it down there is a clear relationship between cause and effect. I bet part of the treatment for this illness involves antibacterial herbs.
