PERLITE...humidity yea right!

I've searched and found no solutions to my perlite woes. I'm so jealous of all you guys that have success with perlite as a humidification technique, but for me I'm lucky if the RH gets to 40%! I live in the deep south...RH in house stays around 35-45% in the winter, my plastic container is completely sealed, my perlite is 5 inches deep and dampened to perfection, per some of the most senior posters and still no high humidity! I think I'm going to have to find an alternative humidification technique. Does anybody else had SO MUCH trouble with this god forsaken stuff!

How big is your container? Do you have holes in it? I have also been having problems with perlite lately, with a large container and many holes I have to mist 3 times daily.

I have absolutely no holes in the damn thing! The container is roughly 16 X 12 X 14. Glad to hear that I'm not the only one;)

Persoanly i have not had any problems with perlite, apart from the odd time that the humidity drops for a short period, i use a digi gauge and there not the greatest. Even if u can confirm that it appears to be accurate, there are other factors that make them in acurate like running of battery and the sensor getting coated in spores.
It may be that your ambient humidity is just not enough for perlite to work, u could try using a small humidifier in your room to bring the ambient rh up to about 50, my room is about 51 rh, my humidity peaks at 96, with it sometimes dropping as low as for short periods of time.
In my FC misting doesnt even effect the reading, also not that temperature will effect your humidity, as the temp raises your humidity will go down, My FC stays around 70F.
It may well be the case that your gonna have to try another method, u could try using a bubble stone in your FC this will also help provide FAE.

You said you have no holes in your FC. For the pearl to work you need a bunch of holes on all six sides. Watch the u-tube RR video (buckshot FC). Or do a search here for it. The air has to pass through the pearl from the bottom and up and out of the FC. This pulls the moisture out of the pear which = humidity in the FC. I have holes in my FC with a room RH of under 30% and I'm getting 88% RH in the FC without misting.

The sealed terrarium, as said above is your problem. For perlite to evaporate its water, it must have someplace to go. Rinse the perlite, and then let it drain in a colander before placing in the terrarium. In my experience, perlite is the most dependable humidification system there is, and it won't flood your substrates if the humidistat or timer fails. RR

So is drilling holes in the terrarium really essential if you want to use damp perlite? I just want to get 100% confirmation before I go drilling holes in mine.

Perlite can be re used, personaly i would just prefer to dump the old stuff and use fresh.
I have read somewhere that u can rinse it clean then bake it in the oven, otheres have said just rinse. Im about to replace my perlite as its been in use for 2 months.

Also, If there is big temperature fluctuations where your FC is, the humidity levels can vary widely.
