What's your latest project?
    #7621648 - 11/11/07 11:16 AM (16 years, 2 months ago)

What are you currently trying to improve about yourself? I'm currently trying to open my heart chakra and have more empathy with those who have pissed me off in the past. I'm learning not to take things so personally, and to try and see things from the other person's point of view. If something about someone bothers me, I try to see it as a reflection of my shadow, and rather than judge them, I try to release that negative attachment from my ego. I'm also coming to see the value of uncertainty. While I enjoy exploring different models of reality, I try not to take any one model too seriously, and instead embrace the mystery of life. So, how about you?

Im working on playing the game of life, and taking advantage of positive opportunities. Gotta stop think about things so much.

I'm trying to develop maturity. To see beyond myself, to be a productive member of society, to cultivate an automatic and innate compassion for others. I'm 24 years old, and this feels like more of a transitional period from childhood to adult hood than 18 or 21 did. So thats what I'm working on. Learning to work hard without bitching about it. Chop wood and carry water without struggle. In my line of descendants and ascendants, I am becoming the "active" one, the one who must produce and work and keep the whole thing afloat, for about the next 40 years, until my descendants take over and take care of ME. And then I die and they carry on.

This WAY, the Tao, the Way, animates our actions and directly assumes It's identity in and through us.

This is what I have come to rationally believe. The next step is to "know" it. To know it is to act and that is real freedom. IMO this is the only freedom we really have.

Consider the following:

Quote:

Most Western psychological theories confuse the ego with the Self. As a result, we view the self as an object in need of adaptation or correction. On the other hand, most Eastern philosophies...distinguish the ego from the authentic Self. The Self is to be realized, not perfected. It cannot be improved upon or in any way altered, for It remain ever transcendent to time and space and all the changes that transpire within them.

From the perspective of Zen, the ego (or mask of personality) is not to be corrected but released.

It's true that this quote has some more abstract ideas, some of which I'm not so sure about, but the crux of it is that the ego is not our true self, and as a result, working to improve it or anything like that is in a way pointless.

If there's anything to be done with the ego, it seems like it would just be to constantly open your heart and open your mind to it. To shed as much loving awareness onto all its many facets, and so to see through it.

By trying to change or improve it, I think you're giving it far more reality than it actually has.

But makes for the heaviest sword"

Making the noise "penicillin" is no substitute for actually taking penicillin.

Im going through this very thing right now at 21. Ive really become active and dont mind doing work. It really makes you feel positive to accomplish something.

The following is NOT mere semantic quibbling, but your approach is likely to fail as it starts with an erroneous assumption.

No one has ever pissed you off. You have ALWAYS pissed yourself off in response to another's words or actions that you judged to be unfair, immoral, unethical, insensitive or whatever.

To the poster.
Your attempt to be more empathic may take you to a point where you are expressing empathy, habitually. ALthough this is nessecary, what i have discovered about being accepting of life, is that it does not involve trying in any way.
What i think you are searching for is an experience of being empathic towards all if not many. yet where i think you may be is a at a point where you are trying to move or going towards an experience of empathic reality, whereas empathic realities are not created intentionally.however, the very search that you find yourself in, when attempting to be empathic, is created out of the knowledge that empathy is attained, whereas empathy is experienced.

Its hard to explain why but first you must consider that when attempting to be empathic and going towards that reality; you search for ways that seem to make you more empathic. This implies one fundamental problem with attempting to be empathic; and it is that in attempting to be experiencing a more empathic existence, you keep a constant concious look on your thoughts and feelings. Through this i gather one question in regards to our pre-conditioned attitudes and it is; does the very intention of attempting to achieve the overcoming of our preconditioning, trully guide us well, if in attempting to achieve, one is at all times aware if he or she is acheiving...and if we are watching ourselves to see on our improvement and achievements, such as the experience of being more empathic, is experiencing emapthy, as all it is, trully possible, given that our attention is focused on whether we acheive empathy or not, partly and surely?

To this i must answere no. We cannot experience empathy in all its splendor and peacefulls suttlty, if we are focused on whether we are being or not being empthic or for example, or loving and angry. In this battle to win over our pre-condition, it is not a matter of winning or losing in regards to battling against it, but rather, accepting that we do not 'need' to move against anything, rather flow along with it, itching that pinching itch to show ourselves lovingly why we are not experiencing truth and the joy of it.

Therefore While looking out of an empathic eye, and living an emapthic reality, one will forfits the experience of it, when one begins to distinguish it is achieving the reality of being more empathic.
Like an eye, that cannot see itself.
Like a sword that cannot cut itself.
Empathy is experienced through the eye of empathy and through the eye of 'whether or not we are acheiving progress in being more empathic."

Anyways, hope this helps, im sure its messy, but please to reply with anything that u think is due.

JLM

More important is learning how to land when you fall.

About 8 years ago there was a 25th anniversary pictorial issue of one of the popular climbing magazines. There were no articles, just breath-taking photos of ice and free climbing, etc. About 1/3 of the photos had a footnote that read "deceased" and these were people mostly in their 20s and 30s.

Uncertainty is very valuable. My latest project involves the musical expression of multiple, an as of yet undetermined number of, but probably a series of either 10 or 12 permutations of rhythmic expression conceived of by a 3+ year old(me) and structurally resembling a pyramid or other hierarchically pointed, cyclical assemblage that can also be counted on the teeth.

In this case 28 is the grid, but these coordinates are only a transient guideline and this particular project involves the subversion of dominant forms of rhythmic structure and the introduction of probably new and hopefully, healthfully hypnotic polyrhythmic grooves into the collective un/consciousness. If you can count to 9, you can dig it. But if you can be present in time, that's all it takes to move in seven different ways at once...uuuuugh words...the pink floyd song from Piper...look I am groovin so hard on Return to Forever right now.... Even though this runs almost entirely contrary to the thrust of this post.

I've always found a good rule to be summed up by the simple postamble "and one extra" or something along that line. Any statement that can be trained to be spoken in under one second, regardless of the content seemed to me from my earliest memory an effective tool to smite the accute aversion to, or perhaps compulsion toward something as of yet unidentified... in the urgency maybe that's what it was, that or the resident personna taking my own middle name as title along with the signature of the detreitus introduced from the teat of my up and down bringing, neurotically seated at the center of my upper frontal head.

It's really all about rhythm and while there is some degree of permutation and subdivison involved in language, to such a degree that I freely profess words are a foremost pre-occupation of mine, and yours too you bastard, there's no point in me telling you about it.
Some music is chased away by its mention.

The view you expressed is a common misconception. It is a reasonably safe activity if care and planning are used

Then it must have been a long time ago. Solo free climbing (without safety rope) is not considered the norm. In any case if there was not an element of fear it would be less interesting to me. I see it as a spiritual activity in that sense.
