NIGGY TARDUST
    #7621179 - 11/11/07 07:22 AM (16 years, 2 months ago)

Alright, I'm not sure how many of you might have checked this out already, but I'm here to give mention to the recent release of the album "The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust."

This is the latest release from poet/musician Saul Williams. For those NIN fans out there, this album was produced (and most of the music is credited to) Trent Reznor!

It's a tight fusion of hip-hop influenced lyrics/poetry and NIN-style industrial rock. A somewhat new flavor for the ear, and a most commendable effort from Williams, whom I've admired for a while. And huge NIN fans such as myself, should give it at least one spin to hear what Trent has most recently been up to.

Saul gives nods to "modern hip-hop" and produces some lyrics vaguely reminiscent of it, while at the same time calling the whole industry into question. Mr. Williams is nothing if not a poet of consciousness. The lyrics are at times deep and meaningful, at times playful and fun. The backing music is a wave of sound that while strongly industrial-influenced, is a good fusion of genres.

The album is a tight melange of different moods and messages. From the hardcore hip-hop feel of "Black History Month" (a ridiculously infectious song) to the politically charged "Tr(n)igger," with almost accusatory lyrics such as
"would Jesus Christ
come back American?
what if he's Iraqi
and here again?"
all the way to A respectable cover of "Sunday Bloody Sunday," to the softer and more heartfelt "No One Ever Does" to the frustration and despair, yet persistent hopefulness expressed in "Raised to Be Lowered."

The although only released at the beginning of the month, the reviews are already mounting, in favor of the fact that "Niggy Tardust" is a work of brilliance.

The best news of all... in the spirit of the radiohead release, you can go to the niggy tardust website and choose to either pay $5 for a download of the album (in your choice of format) along with a PDF lyric book.... or you can choose to check it out completely free, no strings, at a max quality of 192 kbps.

You can download the album here: http://niggytardust.com/saulwilliams/download

Give it a listen. If you've got paypal or a credit card, I can assure you that it's worth the $5. But give it a listen first, if you're not sure.

I'm not terribly afraid to admit that I do download a LOT of music. uTorrent is my friend. BUT...when someone puts work into an album that is something a little different like this, then has the balls to just give it away, if you don't think it's worth the $5..... in my mind, that makes him all the more deserving of my money.

If you want to check out some of the songs before committing to a download, you can find some here: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=271408406

and some more here: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=13395348

My current favorites are "Black History Month" "Break" "No One Ever Does" and "Raised to Be Lowered"... but I've been listening to the whole thing every day since I've gotten it.

Anyway, if you're up for something new, check it out. If you like it, help get the word out. Feedback appreciated.

"To manifest your dreams before you manifest your fears.
To navigate beyond the treachery of self despair.
To find the balance between all you sense and all you see.
To find the patience and the strength it takes to let it be.
To stand amongst the crowd and have the strength to hold your own.
To throw away the pen and pad and simply be the poem.
To rise above hatred to love through seeming contradiction.
To seldom take a side and learn to compliment the friction.
To bring about the change within that we can’t live without.
To shift and re-arrange ideals and learn to deal with doubt.
To voice the victory and unlearn ways of self-defeat.
To learn the value of, “yo, fuck the words just ride the beat”.
To leave the comfort zones of all you know to all you feel.
To step beyond the void and realize the unknown is real.
To re-imagine every obstacle as just a means of honing craft and learn to laugh at failure's funny dream."

Ha for some reason I was thinking Gil-Scott Heron when I read Saul Williams, so I considered buying the album. Luckily I realized that I was wrong in time

I kinda do know what you mean...understanding the analogy....

But I have to disagree on a certain level. I do get the comparison to Gnarls Barkley...and I feel much the same as you about that project. "Crazy" was a great single, I checked out the album, enjoyed it a few times, but it did seem to kinda get old fast.

I think this, lyrically, is much deeper, and on a whole other plane than that album. The lyrics are a little different (more musically suited) than Saul's normal fare, but still holding some of the depth he is known for...something I found absent from a lot of the Gnarls Barkley stuff...I found that to be semi-deep at points, but almost a pseudo-depth..like if my little brother was sincerely trying to be deep. Heartfelt...but not profound, if you know what I mean.

And as much as I thought the Danger Mouse production/music from Gnarls Barkley was ample for what it was... he is NO Trent Reznor.

Anyway, that's just my opinon.

All input, whether in concert with or contradictory to mine, definitely welcome.

eh I don't like Trent Reznor, I find his music either really silly like Pretty Hate Machine, or just boring.

Hm...wow.

I can respect your opinion, but I have a hard time agreeing with it. If you look at the time when Pretty Hate Machine came out, it was definitely unique for its time. Some of the stuff trent did there, musically, lyrically, production-wise, I think was far ahead of his time.

As a long-time NIN fan, PHM definitely isn't my favorite NIN album. It has some good tracks, and it's great for what it was. But IMO, his best work is to be found on The Downward Spiral which I find to be a very deep album, that runs the gamut of human negativity and pain, something a lot of people have come to identify with. Definitely not for everyone, though.

I think in recent years, trent has come to new terms with life, and developed new views. I think his music reflects this. Honestly.... I'm not sure it's favorable for his career. I do like all of his new stuff, but it doesn't hold the same status in my ears and in my mind as The Downward Spiral, or the stuff on The Fragile.

Trent is SOBER now (allegedly), which came as a huge shock to me. Previous to this he was admittedly an alcoholic. I've also heard a few candid interviews where he talked about drugs.... allegedly, when he was first coming up, he sold speed to make rent. He has said that he was fascinated with heroin, but respected himself too much to fall into its trap. And (my favorite) he has said that his favorite drug is MUSHROOMS. Allegedly (this is from his mouth) he was tripping balls on shrooms when they shot the "March of the Pigs" video. If you pay attention, you can kinda tell he was out of it.

Anyway... enough of my inflated opinons of trent. Any other comments?

You guys suck.
This album rocks.

Hey!
NiggyTardust, no guitar
Ghetto gothic millionaire
a super-duper star
Side affects may include simply being who you are.

And Trent Reznor's production on this album really fucking rocks.
He shouldve done hip hop a while ago.
Its a great outlet for him.
The best of the album is around the middle and the end.
I love the song No One Ever Does.

Anyway this album fucking rocks and it sounds nothing like Gnarls Barkley in the slightest. Even though that album rocks too. You people need to try to listen to it more. just get used to it a little and youll see how much it rocks.

peace.

Awesome. I'm glad to hear you're into it.

This seems to be one of those projects that people will either love or hate.... with just a few on the fence.

The NIN fans mostly seem to be into it.. but I am the kind of person where if trent recorded the sound of himself shitting into a bucket, I would probably find it to be a more elegantly musical turd than most.

Hm....pretend I didn't say that.

Anyway, glad to hear the feedback. Good, bad, indifferent, I'd definitely like to hear some more opinions.

first off, i didn't say the album sounded like gnarls barkley, i said it reminded me of the album. the format.

one producer, one off-color mc/artist. the mishmash of bizarre beats that arent really easy to listen to. they even have cover songs on both albums, and when you look at it:

[gone] daddy [gone]
[sunday] bloody [sunday]

even the cover song's names are similar!

no, the gnarls barkley album and niggy tardust are completely musically different sounding albums, but they do have their similarities.

as far as trent producing hiphop beats are concerned, i think i am quite qualified to say that when compared to the entire spectrum of hiphop, his beats are at best just below par. i have a good 16 years of hardcore hiphop education and involvement under my belt, as well as being a nin fan as far back as when broken first came out - picking up EVERYTHING from him, including all singles - domestic and imports.

with that said, reznor is an amazing producer with skills that are quite hard to touch in the realms of electronic and industrial music. however, if you were to judge these beats based on, say, anyone from dj premier, large professor, erick sermon, j dilla, madlib, even into the odder spectrum like el-p's early works, trent just cannot touch these producers and theres a ton more. to be quite blunt, i could easily name off 50 different hiphop producers that create a higher quality output than mr reznor in the hiphop specific genre. like i said, just below par as best - AS FAR AS HIPHOP IS CONCERNED.

i'd also like to mention that i believe the production heard here to be some of the best i've heard since halo 10, the last good nin release that was proper from begining to end. however, this is more opinion than anything else and can be easily argued.

yes, trent is certainly moving into interesting turf. i have a feeling this might be a one-off "been there, done that" thing for him. let's hope it's not though. perhaps with time, education and experimentation, trent will be able to create something new, high quality and influencial in the hiphop genre.

just my 2 cents.

[edit]

also, does anyone else here kinda get that whole "spank rock" vibe off this album?

I'm not sure how to categorize this album.. its not really a hiphop album in the true sense, and its not really a rock album either.

What it is is a really unique concept of an album with some very awesome production from Mr Reznor, with a lot more going on than he seems to have done on his last two albums with their stripped down sound. Here the sound is quite full and works well with the varied vocal delivery by Saul.

I don't think its fair to compare Reznor with the producers of fine hip hop albums just because this doesn't even feel that much like a straight up hip hop album. It's more industrial based than beat-based and as a result its far more unique than something that may have come about from a partnership with a producer who is used to putting together club beats.

I'm enjoying it quite a bit thus far but I think a few more listens will solidify a few favourite tracks.. Scared Money is a quick choice though.

Great beat production and great lyrics, but why are the vocals so dry and up front?

Trent's beats and Saul's vox are mixed like oil and water, it's hard to listen to, imo.
