Why is this happening!

So I've had this bulk grow colonizing for about a month now, (I open it up every 3 days to check up on it). Today, I open it up and what the hell do you think I see? Hyphal Knots and Pins!! Not only was I not expecting this, but I notice that the mycelium really grows mostly on the straw and not so much on the substrate. I poked around and the bottom 3 inches is solid like a cake but not the top. What now? Do I hurry and case this bad baby?
This is what it looks like from the top

This is what it looks like a lot closer and at the corner, ( see the knots and pins?

Still another close up.

I wouldn't case. you have a bunch of fragile primordia there you could easily ruin by casing. I would just let it go for the first flush at least with no casing.
hopefully you'll get a nice flush out of it, it's been long enough...

Hey Mitch! You wouldn't sacrifice a few primordia for the better good of the overall grow? That is a 30 gallon tub with about 40 lbs of Poo, straw, coir, gypsum, worm castings, and coffee. almost 5" in depth. The underneath is really solid, It's just the top that didn't completely colonize. Any reason for that? That's what's confusing me at this point. Why is the underneath kicking ass and only the straw is colonized on top?

How so you have 5 inches of substrate depth??
How much substrate did you mix with 40 pounds of hpoo n stuff?

I did all the mixing first and then weight out 8 five pound bags. I do that because it is so much easier to pasteurize 8 bags versus a whole 40 pounds at one time. The rest of the substrate that is left over, I throw away.

wait your confusing me. You mix the colonized substrate with the hpoo and then pasturize it with the colonized substrate mixed in? That doesn't kill the mycileum?

A whole month of colonization? Isn't that a long time? I thought it took something like 1-2 weeks for colonization.

No, I do all the mxing first, (poo, coir, worm castings, coffee, gypsum). Pasteurize next, THEN ADD THE GRAIN. And yes, I do let the bags cool down before I add the spawn.

I think its obvious the strain prefers the straw .. but it could be difference in temp or moisture that caused the mycelium to grow better in the bottom than the top? just a thought

If the manure dried out on top, that would restrict colonization. You might try misting. Straw is hollow, so holds more moisture, but there's no way the primordia that are forming on individual pieces of straw will make it to maturity without aborting, so don't worry when they do. With cubes, there really isn't much additional benefit to more than about three inches of substrate, unless it's mostly straw. If the bottom is colonized solid, I'd scrape off the top part. After a month, molds are sure to hit the uncolonized areas soon. RR
