PF Cake jar sizes - HELP!

So I'm an idiot. I went to the store with my handy-dandy materials list for my 1st PF attempt and forgot to write down what size jars. I picked up one pint jars instead of 1/2 pint jars. Can I just double the amount or should I return them and get the 1/2 pint?

Get the half pints it will save a ton of time waiting for cakes to finish.

I see your point, Magash. Double the substrate, double the time?

using pint jars will probably take a considerable amount more time, although it would work i prefer using half pints, they tend to colonize nice and fast. especially wide mouth as opposed to the taller ones ;/

it takes pints twice as long as 1/2 pints to colonise. You want the mycelium to colonise as fast as possible, thus 1/2 pints and the pf tek are a must. You can use pints,I have, but, they take forever it seems to colonise. Stick with 1/2 pints and the pf tek.If you want bigger jars-step up to grains

I don't think it would take twice as long to colonize a pint jar over a 1/2 pint. Wouldn't the growth be exponential?
I think the biggest problem is areas left open for contamination for a longer period of time.

Are you a "Gambling person"? Wanna bet on it? Take a 1/2 pint and a pint and innoculate them both with the same strain and see which one gets done first! Same substrate, same strain, two different size jars-1/2 pint-pint THE 1/2 Pint will smoke the pint in finishing time by far! A little common sense The pints contain twice as much substrate therefore taking twice as long to finish colonizing my two pennies again!

pints are fine to use...its been about 10 days since afoaf innoculated (with a ton of spores) some pint jars and a couple of them are 90+% done! just make sure to inject plenty spore solution at all entry points and they should be nice and quick.

doc34, have a look at bacterial growth for example. That is exponential. Start off with 1, 1 becomes 2, 2 become 4, 4 become 8 etc. etc. I would imagine the reason why pint jars take "twice" as long is that they dry out. If a way is found to provide them with sufficient moisture I would imagine the colonisation time would only be a few days longer.

That logic might work -- if we were dealing with bacteria in an aerated liquid nutritive broth. However, when you deal with fungi and real-world solid substrates, you're talking about something completely different.
My growth starts off pretty slow, ramps up geometrically, and then hits a plateau. Remember, you're generally dealing with what can be thought of as an interface plane -- the line of mycelial growth. This plane, under proper conditions, generally advances at a pretty set rate, no matter how large the mycelial mat behind it is, once it reaches a certain size. From what I've seen, about one centimeter of advancement per day seems pretty average for strong mycelial growth. You get the interface forging forward in a hemispherical mass from the innoculation points. The growth rate actually -is- geometric, since the interaface area keeps increasing, but it's certainly not n^2 growth.
The reason that pint jars take twice as long is simply because there's twice as much volume to colonize.
This is also actually the reason that you can get grain jars to colonize so damned fast. Once you get a good amount of colonization, you shake the thing up, and then you have a few hundred points of innoculation spread throughout the entire jar, with their interfaces advancing in a spherical manner from each innoculated grain. In this case, you actually -are- getting growth comparable to ideal bacterial growth, because you've fragmented the interface and increased its effective size.

^^^ agreed. I wasn't trying to say that the growth WAS exponential, being that it's not growing in a circle, rather within the confines of a jar. On agar I would assume to growth to be exponential, but inside the jars the fastest growing period would probably be just after germination, until the growth hits the edge of the jar.
At a guess I would say that if someone did a day by day comparison of a 1/2 pint and pint jar, the pint jar would actually have more mycelial (word?) growth at the early stages (more room to grow "exponentially"), but in finishing it would be slower.
BTW I'm not really arguing, just thinking aloud

Yes and no.
Yes, thats quite small, so colonization will occur and it will be very fast (hint: use less spore solution).
No, thats kind of a bogus size in the sense that you will have to do more jars to get the same yield. Its a side issue of course.
Assuming you can find nothing around the right size, go for it.
But don't discount the use of glasses rather than jars, glasses are far easier to find in all different sizes. See here.

for a beginner like me, maybe it's better to start with 6oz. jars. I have access to 6oz. and 9oz. but not 8oz.
