fan wiring help

I have this fan http://www.weirdstuff.com/cgi-bin/item/13207 with a 12v dc output and it works great. I also have a dimmer switch wired into an outlet. I would think that it would work to just plug the converter into the dimmer but it does not. The fan runs full speed or not at all.
all of my 110ac stuff works fine. Do I need to wire in a rheostat into the wiring after the adapter?

i dont think this is the best place to be asking this question.. perhaps a DIY forum would be better

Never use a lighting dimmer as a speed control. Motor speed in an AC motor is determined by the 60hz frequency of the line, not the voltage or current. Motor speed controllers vary the frequency, not the voltage.
With DC motors such as you have, speed is controlled by the amount of current that passes through the windings. Thus, you can use a rheostat in series with the supply, or a lower voltage power source. For example, you could run that 12 volt motor on 6 volts to reduce speed.
A mechanical method to reduce flow is to block off part of the air intake. By starving the unit for air, less air is moved, therefore less work is done, and the amount of current used naturally drops. RR

thanks a bunch. so when you say "in series" does it matter whether the rheostat is before or after the voltage converter?
I think this is a perfect for this question as it relates to my fogger bucket. If I was wiring something up that was unrelated then I could see your point.

It should be between the converter and the fan.
