Floaters & WBS - do you take out sunflower seeds without the shells?

Or is it just the shells of the sunflower seeds that are bad? The seeds do not float but are naked. Not sure if that's ok. Can't find this in the search

One of the teks says to take out any black hulled sunflower. But not sure about the seeds themselves. Anyone? Mush is tough & it can overcome alot milkman but optimizing results is another thing, plus, not sure if it's a contam hazard or what

just make sure you simmer the seeds in a pot for 15-20 minutes first and then PC. simmering it allows for spores that are heat resistant to germinate. and then the PC'ing would kill all contaminants possible. =)

Not going to simmer. Going to soak 12 hours and that's it.

Soaking germinates endospores. PCing them kills them once they are germinated.

I've always heard soaking for 24 hours. Longer than that and the seeds pop though.

Ahh, thats a mistake in my opinion.
Simmering makes the seed swell up with water. I'd say simmering adds roughly 50% more water to the WBS.
Follow the teks, there aren't any rewards for shortcuts thats for sure!

Soaking alone (24hrs) has worked much better than simmering for me. Removing the "floaters" will help you save room for the more nutritious material for your mushies. Some brands of bird seed will have the sunflower seeds which can cause it to be a little "mushy", just add a little verm into it to help with that. If you don't let it dry enough, the verm will help collect the excess moisture you have anyway, win-win.

The principles of chemistry will make the seeds soak water up just by soaking, in my opinion. Simmering is a pain in the ass. last time, simmered for 20 mins after soaking for 12 hours and it was a big mistake. too wet and too many burst seeds. there's just no point in simmering
soaking can depend - 12-36 hours depending on your seed according to agar. he wroteup a method somewhere for checking hydration for wbs and whether or not to do 12, 24, 36 or something else. it all depends on what kinda seed.
