What makes a person a "professional"? Are we talking jobs that require years of higher education and degrees? Cause thats definately not me. But I spent 2 decades perfecting my professional skills and I doubt any doctor or lawer could do my job either.

as summit asked, what makes someone a "professional" in your mind? blowing 10 extra years and hundreds of thousands of dollars?
i don't wear a suit and tie.. but i'm a professional... been doing my work for 12 years.. went to college for it.. and get paid pretty damn well.
and i'd love to see a doctor, lawyer, banker, investment professional or any other suit come into my realm and try and survive..

The only way you can avoid bosses and jobs is if you don't care about making a living. Which leads to the second freedom: the freedom to starve." - Tom Morello

I'm not a lawyer or a doctor but I'm a material manager for one of the big US auto manufacturers.
You'd be surprised how many "professionsal" do drugs. I've gotten real fucked up with a lawyer and I interned at Merril Lynch in college one of the investment guys was tellin me about how his biggest client was a major stoner and would get high as fuck while they would go over his portfolio with him haha.

People seem to have a natural defensiveness against doctors and lawyers. Y'know we probably couldnt do their job either... In fact I doubt many people could to any other person's job except for the lowest manual labor.

The one who fails out of medical school, probably could Have become a doctor- but they didn't, they failed out... and now they cannot perform brain salad surgery.

Well, i think the word professional is in no way limited to jobs that require higher educations. Nor does it have anything to do with a suit and tie or a certification.
I would call anyone who is experienced and specialized in their craft is a professional.
You are not a professional if you just do something just to get some money. You should do it because you are good at it also.
-------------------- "To do right is to know what you want. Now when you are dissatisfied with yourself it's because you are after something you don't really want. What objects are you proposing to yourself? Are they the objects you really value? If they are not, you are cheating yourself. I don't meant that if you chose to pursue the objects you most value, you will attain them; of course not. Your experience will tell you that. But success in getting after much labor what you really don't care for is the bitterest and most ridiculous failure." -George Santayana
