What The Hell Has Happened To Saturday Morning Cartoons???
    #7617653 - 11/10/07 05:31 AM (16 years, 5 months ago)

I remember growing up watching "The Bugs Bunny - Road Runner Hour", "The Flintstones", "The Jetsons", "Heckle & Jeckle", "Yogi Bear"
and all the of other Hanna Barberra & Warner Bothers cartoons along with "Bullwinkle & Friends" and all of the rest of the
greatest stuff I'd ever seen as a kid.

What are kids watching now?

I guess they'll never know what they're missing out on. :frown:

Oh well.

I have pondered this as well - I think the cartoons ahve changed to meet the needs of our hyper active ADD - jacked up on sugar crisps youth - If you think about it - cartoons now don't have much "plot" - lots of blinking lites and action sequences - Tom and Jerry were hand painted stills with glycerin overlays for animation (at least the early ones were) I always watch old cartoons, a lot of them are "art" compared to the flat Korean stuff that is out there now - But kids still love them.

I frequently watch children, and I once broke out my "classic" Bugs Bunny dvds - they were not into them, and wanted Naturo and some other crap I handn't heard of.

Hey - kids want want to watch what their friends watch. They arent missing out on anything - but the quality of cartons has really hit the shitter.

You can get all of that shit on DVD now... might as well go out and get a few, cuz you aren't going to see them on tv anymore.

Cartoons definitely aren't what they used to be... Oracle explained it pretty well. My brother was fortunate enough to be born in the last few years of Warner Bros. being mildly popular, so he still appreciates the good cartoons. He normally watches the current ones though, which I simply cannot sit and watch with him. Too many screaming characters, shallow plots and piss poor animation, whether its more technologically advanced or not.

I noticed that the Christan right has a lot of shows out there( mostly on Disney but on the Fox Family channel as well) with tarted up little 16 year olds (playing 10 -13 year olds - being "adult" and that entails lying to parents to get in all sorts of pseudo-sexual situations - kinda weird to see a "12 year old" with color lip gloss, nail polish, mascara, eyeliner, and snug jeans.

not cool bro.

I know, huh?

You'd think that things all get better with time and technological advancement... But not cartoons! WTF????

Where's the quality, plot, comedy?

Where are Sherman and Mr. Whoopie?

Where are Bullwinle Moose and Rocky the flying Squirrel? ... Boris and Natasha?

Fred & Barney? Betty & Wilma?

Rosie & The Jetsons?

Yogi & BooBoo?

Underdog?

Damn.. I could go on and on...

I loved that shit!

I think everyone's nostalgia for their childhood is skewing your perspective. Old cartoons didn't have any higher quality or deeper plot than cartoons today. If anything, the opposite could be said.

I may despise cartoons like Naruto, but it does have a consistent, evolving plot; unlike virtually every Hanna-Barbera or Warner Bros. cartoon. I'm not saying I don't enjoying these cartoons, but they shouldn't be held up on some sort of animation pedestal just because we all grew up watching them. Their significance in our personal lives should have no bearing on the ability to critically analyze their quality.

Actually, I'd say that X-Men: The Animated Series is a much better Saturday morning cartoon. It taught me not to judge others based on differences, and to be accepting of people even if I don't understand them.

But I do love me some Warner Bros. cartoons. Now mostly for the subtle jokes aimed at adults that flew right over my head when I first watched them as a child.

All the cool cartoons are now oriented towards adults. South Park, Futurama, Simpsons, Family Guy, etc. The one children's cartoon these days that seems remotely entertaining to me is Spongebob Squarepants.

damn dude, no one remembers Johnny Bravo ! that show was awesome along with dexters lab.

I miss them a whole bunch. But it was the japanese invasion that ruined all cartoons, i mean anime WTF is that? although DBZ as a kid was pretty cool.

all that other stuff is crap.

I still watch cartoons alot but only like adult cartoons south park, robot chicken, family guy, athf.

Every once in a while the wife and I will watch a bit of the Boomerang channel just for kicks.  All the great toons from our youth on there.  I outgrew Saturday morning cartoons before the 80's so its all Hanna Barbera/Warner Bros for me.

I loved Johnny Quest as a kid.  Everytime his stereotypical indian pal Hadji would yell I'd laugh and yell along with him...

Silversoul hit the nail... there are still great cartoons but they are geared towards adults. Which is interesting because the greats we so fondly remember were geared towards adults as well. The Saturday morning cartoon phenomenon really was a family time because both children and adults were entertained. As cartoons became more and more kid oriented the context of watching them further alienated the adults.

One kids cartoon still in production that still rocks is "Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends" which is drawn and voiced by the same couple who did PowerPuff Girls and Dexter's Laboratory. That is, Craig McCracken and Lauren Faust.

As far as a fucking superb cartoon that is still hand-drawn albeit digitally check out "Venture Brothers". Not kid-safe, tho.

Dexter's lab and Johnny Bravo were extremely stupid and repetitive. The old warner brothers cartoons may have been animated well but the plots and jokes are all the same. The only new cartoons that bother me are the American and Canadian ones that try to mimic the style of anime. The older episodes of sponge bob square pants are a lot funnier then a lot of old shows.

The cartoon "My Dad is a Rock Star" is good too.

I found some new Looney Tunes done in flash I think on their website:
http://looneytunes.warnerbros.com/web/toons/toons.jsp

It's not all anime that ruined cartoons, there's a lot of good anime that will remind you a lot of old cartoons (at least the old anime... Stuff like Urusei Yatsura and Ranma 1/2, or even newer stuff like Azumanga Daioh is funny.)

Specifically it's Dragonball Z, where it was mostly a big fight scene every episode. Dragonball original was really good though.
