quick question. how cold is too cold for pedros? what is the lowest temperature they can tolerate and for how long? i know it gets pretty fucking cold in the desert at night..... just wondering because this will be my first winter with them and i dont want any mistakes in judgement. its been a little nippy the past few mornings, however i just walked outside to say hello to them at sunrise, and its goddamn cold! its gotta be in the low to mid 40's. granted this is florida and usually we only get about 2-3 weeks of freezing weather..... just being precautious. should i put a blanket over them when it gets close to freezing? bring them onto the porch?

i say 40-45 is the lowest i would let my get , if it gets down below that for even one night i have seen them die or tips rot right off the top of peoples cacti, if it is going to get below this i recommend bringing them inside
also you know to stop watering them if temp are getting that low

yeah, i'd agree that anywhere above 40 F, and you've got nothing to worry about. however, san pedro can often handle much colder temperatures than that. below 28-30 F ended up meaning certain death in my little experiment in southeast USA Zone 7. however, a few growers in the desert southwest reported no damage even into the teens F. it seems that frost protection, soil moisture, and also humidity make a big difference. bone dry appears to be best.

i got all my cacti in my sunroom which has no heat(during weekends) and is uninsulated, have nowhere else to put them for now. temps are around 30-36 at night.

40f seems to be the temp which everyone recomends u start to keep a close eye on outdoor cacti... they will tolerate lower temps if kept dry... but once it gets to freezing point it doesnt take a scientist to figure out that cacti are 90% water and if they freeze the cell walls will rupture, reducing your prize specimens to mush once they thaw... they may tolerate freezing temps for short periods but i wouldnt risk it personally... either cover them with something to help keep the temps up or move them under cover if they are in pots... i remember a guy over at the nook who lost his entire collection when the temps were unusually cold in his greenhouse, very sad to see 6 foot trichs reduced to mush
i know a guy in florida who has a beautiful stand of trichs planted in the ground, they dont recieve any protection from the elements and are 8' - 10' tall...

yeah i did know to not water them when its cold. thanx for the info.
well its kinda of hard to bring them INSIDE right now, we have 3 cats and its an apartment, the best i could do is bring them on the porch and cover them, if it were to get into the 30's for a couple nights, would you think a nice thick blanket would help?

30's F, kept dry, covered with a blanket at night. nothing to worry about, you'll be fine.
