Need help with humidity.

I have a 64 quart FC with 4"-5" of moist pearl...using buckshot tek. Holes on all 6 sides (with 20 1/4" holes on longest sides evenly spaced...16 holes on short sides.). Can't seem to get RH over 87%. I live in arid area, RH in house under 30%. Pearl seems kinda dry. Is it possible to over saturate the pearl? I would like to add water to it. Or maybe there is not enough holes? Have digital temp/RH gauge from "the shack" so I expect it to be somewhat accurate. On a side note... is any light source sufficient at 12/12 hrs? I am using a 18000K aquarium light. Kinda high in the red and blue..or so it says. Could only find 4000k cool blue in my size at the store. (18") I do have pins that look healthy enough (for past 3 days) so I guess its not that bad off. I added some jars of water with fish air pump running into them for better FAE, but it did not affect RH. Pics forthcoming.

I think 7-8 hours of light will pretty much do it. As for your humidity problem, do you use a coolmist humidifier?

What's the temperature? You can try plugging some holes and see if the humidity rises.

No cool-mist humidifier. Temp is 68 F at night 72 F during the day (when the light is on). Plugging half of the holes dropped humidity to 79%. Maybe more holes are in order, I could always plug them later if it does not work. This might create a better air flow through the pearl (per high/low pressure difference).

12/12 light cycle, using a bulb in the range of 6000k-7000k.
Digital humidity gauges arnt the greatest, they cant be calibrated and since the readings are voltage dependant, as the battery runs down, it becomes more and more inacurate. Your meter could be giving u a bad reading.
If its one thats not got an external sensor, chances are it will quit working after being in a humid enviroment for too long.
Get a good anologue one and calibrate it.

If your ambient room humidity is very low, I'd suggest running a coolmist humidifier to bring your room humidity up to fifty percent or so, and then you'll be fine in your terrarium. As said, get an analog hygrometer and properly calibrate it at the high end of the scale. I'd also get rid of the aquarium light and get a flurorescent in the range suggested above. RR

strange how plugging holes reduced RH. Interesting theory that about air flow. I do find the rules of humidity quite mystifying. I could do with an idiot's guide. For example, increased temp = reduced RH, right? Why? I'd have thought the opposite.
BTW I don't know what your setup is but 87% is plenty for casings.
