Your brain will not bleed.
Psychedelics are actually relatively harmless compared to many other substances. The potential side effects are of a more psychological nature.
Check out Erowid's Psychoactive Vaults. There is a ton of information debunking common myths surrounding psychedelics, and how pretty much anything most people think they know about psychedelics (Shroomerites excluded of course ) is complete bullshit.
As to the specific mechanism of action, there are a bunch of theories, but I don't think there is a definitive answer as of yet.

7,000 posts and you give an inkling of thought when a friend tells you psychedelics make your brain bleed?

In short, Psylocin has two main effects that I am aware of, both of which are comparable but to the effects of LSD.
1) The molecules themselves physically resemble those of serotonin , and thus create a feeling of calm euphoria. See bmy's (mispelled =P)link on serotonin for details.
2) I'm not very versed in the science here, but psylocin is shown to reduce the inhibiting effect between neurons, which in effect opens flood-gates which are normally severely moderated (which is healthy). This phenomenon enables the extremely deep thinking and understanding which is commonly reported, but it also creates the sensory (usually visual) distortions due to this effect distorting both occipital lobe (actual vision) and associative parts of the brain; the latter part combines with the former... and you have distorted vision along with a distorted ability to identify them: delirium.
Combine "euphoria" and "delirium" and you have psychedelics.
I encourage you to look more in depth into this though! This is just a generalization off the top of my head! If anyone can elaborate, or provide a link to one of the other sixteen thousand threads that better explain this, please do!

The guy who started me on mushrooms was pretty convinced that "tripping" was the brain's reaction to a deadly poison. He was pretty confident that mushroom trips were in essence "near death experiences".
This is both clearly false, and a common example of the many misconceptions regarding one of the safest drugs I know of.

I should have mentioned in the first post, that interestingly, and similar to LSD, the active ingredients in mushrooms only trigger the release of what's already being produced by your brain. For me, this is relatively comforting, since you are really amplifying something your brain already does naturally.

If the mental effects experienced near-death are due to a lack of oxygen, then it is different.

They act as keys that fit in to the locks of your brain.. both metaphorically and semi-realistically

the serotonin (5ht 5-hydroxytryptamine) flooding effect is to keep the excited neurons firing longer each time they are stimulated.
By this impulses appear to fade more slowly than usual
Slowly fading sensations and images smear together with new ones to make richer color, trails and thickened experiencing in general, even the sense of multiple simultaneous realities and time dilation.
LSD and the other psychedelics somehow get additional serotonin flooding effect going in a way that is not fully understood. the effect is far larger than the number of 5ht like molecules available in a dose of lsd.

Science of the norepinephrine/seratonine/dompamine/Monoamine Oxidase systems are based on tests of trial and error and theories and radio isotope dye PET/MRI scans. So, in a nutshell, no one really knows..... That goes for how your anti-depressants work as well.
